I make some bags or purses which can hold an iPad and I'm wondering whether or not to add a long, cross-body strap. The nice leather ones cost around £15 which is a bit too expensive as I normall sell the bags for £18 each. So I'm wondering what other kinds of material could I use to create a long handle or strap that doesn't cost a lot - and isn't a long felt rope?

How about canvas strapping?

I like your method Tracey - it blends so well with the body of the bag and the fabric should stop any 'give' in the handle.

Thanks Lyn, yes it certainly gives it a bit of structure as well as strength, and cost effective.

Super method, Tracey and as Lyn says, no problem with open edges.

Marian, I am guessing you may be anti-rope handle, I think they are too lightweight personally, which is why I have made a 'doubler' for my latest bag, I am hoping to post a picture soon, waiting for light!

Tracey, I love your idea and your bag is really pretty. I don't line my bags with fabric though (sewing isn't my strength)
Yes I have had problems with rope handles which don't last well, so I'm looking to do something more secure, especially if the safety of an iPad depends on it. I've been wondering about coloured nylon rope, and have ordered some to try out. If I can find canvas in nice bright colours I'll have a go with that too.

Thanks very much Marian. Trust me, I am a TOTAL beginner in the sewing department. If your bag has straight sides, then a lining is not that difficult. I have watched Youtube and I make a decent patch pocket now too. However, I also like your two other options too. It is all good practice.

Very nice bag Tracey, you have the 'bag-virus" ? Thanks Viltmaaraan. Yes I was joking with Galina that I didn't want to become known as 'another bag Tracey' on here, but yes I love making them and they have all been different so far! I intersperse them with other things like my little winter scene and working on a cotton grass scene right now.

If you need to you can dye the canvas yourself. Cotton dying is easy

Well Tracey, i like to make bags too. I saw a bag , and i wanted to have the pattern for making myself a felted one. I bought two of these bags. One i needle felted and the other one i still have to do. Before i give them away, supposed to be birthday presents, i make the pattern on a resist and then i want to felt one that way. How do you like the pattern? goo.gl/photos/L1siFdDEYxa5EcxSA

That is really clever, so the body is formed by closing the zip.
