I'd love to wash and card a fleece, but it just seems so wrong to wash away that smell and feel and then drag those gorgeous locks through sharp teeth.

If I'm going to keep the wool in the house, the smell has to be gone or hubby will throw it out the door

I use those plastic 'horse' buckets for washing fleece too. Fairy liquid seems to be the UK alternative to Dawn.

I ussually dont wash fleece before using it. There is a point made... when it has to stay in the house, the "zoo smell" isn't all that pretty to live with. I have everything away in the studio so I dont bother anyone, just myself! I felt it dirty really. Recently a friend came over and helped me felt a huge raw wool Rug. I needed to make space in the studio, so I wanted to use aaaall those bits and pieces i had. All sorts of fleece. All dirty. It got washed as it was felted really... here is the link if you are interested. You might know my friend, Kim florcita.eu/wordpress/?p=2308

It was a huge amount of work and pregnant, pushing that huge roll around... not so much fun. Mr Husband helped by coming up with a little contraption to roll up and down between two people (like a rough machine really) so the felting time got cut back a bit. It still took a loooot of time to prepare the looks, lay the wool, wet it ... felt it by hand and then full it. Funny part... this thing is so big I have nowhere to put it

Maybe I'm just lucky with raw wool, or don't get it from the wrong end mine always smells so lovely and sweet. The rug is gorgeous
