I recently attended a workshop with Caroline Hyde-Brown (http://www.artistcaz.co.uk/) about how to incorporate dried leaves, seeds, grasses etc. into felt pieces. She uses all natural coloured wool in shades of white, brown and black along with silk noil to create a thin pre-felt backing layer. It is wetted down, rubbed and then ironed between parchment paper to dry it. Then seeds, grasses, leaves are laid out with some pieces of wool lightly over the top to give a layering effect in places. A piece of wadding is then cut to a size slightly smaller than the felt background. The grasses/stems are then stitched in place/couched in taking the stitches through the batting on the back - which is fiddly when working wth an intricate or busy layout like mine was. Then where appropriate it is ironed again to press the wool into the backing prefelt. We used some hairspray to hold everything in place to prevent it blowing away as we transported it home, but if it was going straight into a frame this might not be necessary. Caroline makes beautiful pictures this way incorporating other stitching layers with wools, or other yarns which you can see on her web site. It was a very interesting day and I have learned that my style of throwing everything in doesn't really work with this kind of technique. 2016-10-25 16.10.07 by blyth whimsies, on Flickr Save

Marion I can't get the link to work for your pic. The class sounds fascinating though.

I thought it was my computer! I'm sure she will see these comments and sort it out for us.

I edited it, Marian, is that the right photo? Maybe you used the HTML code instead of BBcode.
That's a really nice piece, it looks a lot different zoomed in!
I've used leaves and seeds a few times, my favourite was dried bamboo leaves, I planned on using them in a lampshade but never did.
You've given me the idea to get some from the garden, though!

It's beautiful Marian! It will make a lovely wall hanging for Christmas and the photo/image would make a fantastic Christmas card.

Marion, it's gorgeous I've been saving flowers, grasses, etc. to be able to do something like this.

Thank you Zed for editing the picture link - I've now scrolled down far enough to read the Flickr instructions on the post about adding images duh!
Lyn I love the idea of using it also as a Christmas card. I've been collecting grasses for a while and now I have a way of using them that I like. I've also collected some honesty seeds which I hope to use to represent the moon and have started a seed collection. So many more pots needed now I have a new reason for hoarding yet more stuff!
I forgot to add that there is some batting on the back which is added before stitching the stems in. I'll edit the post to include that in case anyone else wants to try this out.

I wouldn't recommend dandelion seeds!
I tried the flower head from my Cortaderia too, they weren't too bad.
I've been looking for honesty seeds for years. I might just have to buy some if it's possible.

Lovely piece Marian. I've used dried Honesty seed heads, Hydrangea florets and Clematis seed heads.
