I don't do much natural dyeing and have been disappointed with the little that I have done. I would suggest to keep experimenting. Maybe try different mordants. And make sure that the roving/wool is thoroughly wet down before dyeing.

Listening to friends who do natural dyeing, I wonder if you have the same dry weight of roving and yarn? Twist in roving will give white or light spots often. It self-resists. I know thicker yarns will be white in the middle. So maybe yours is too but you're not seeing it. It would mean the outside of your yarn is getting more dye than the roving that you are dying right through. I hope that makes sence.
