The second quarter challenge is up on the blog feltingandfiberstudio.com/2016/04/05/second-quarter-challenge-2016/#comment-38677
For the second quarter challenge I want you to reuse your off cuts, recycle your discard bin and UFO’ and reshape things that have been hanging around to long. Everyone put their thinking caps on . There are lots of possibilities once you stop thinking of things as they are or should have been and think about what they might become.

I am going to revisit my 1st quarter challenge hat and maybe try to reuse some offcuts to decorate some slippers. Have two pair on the table right now. My mind is whirling with ideas, slowing down to do it right will be the challenge.LOL

Eeeek! You're certainly making us think! Excellent challenges. I do hope we can get at least as many participants as last quarter, that was fun

I have plenty of felted scraps that I have been wanting to do something with. This sounds like a perfect challenge for me.

I decided to get my scrap box out - it's full to the top with the 'end bits' of fibres and wool that's past its best. I used a 5 noodle resist which took forever to felt. When I took the noodles out the defined shapes disappeared somewhat and I couldn't get them back in to reshape it. I didn't full it as much as I would normally but I didn't want to lose the noodle shapes altogether and I quite like the softness. I've got plenty more scraps so I think I'll try this again.

Is that like pasta noodles or pool noodles? Can you show us a photo of what you mean? The resulting vessel is very pleasing

Lovely vase (does it have a glass liner or is it purely decorative?). A pretty mix of colours, and do I see a bit of bling in there too?
You've got us all guessing with the 5 noodles - the first thing I thought of was 5 pool noodles, in the same way that Ann uses 5 pencils to make beads...I'm very curious.

Sorry, I should have explained myself instead of thinking everyone would know what's going on inside my head! I taped 5 noodles together and thought I'd use them as a resist. I was thinking of coming out with a tree-like structure rather than a totally smooth vessel. I laid out my scraps in 4 layers, wet the noodles and then just rolled them round the layers to get them covered. I then wrapped the whole thing in bubble wrap and rubbed it. Once I removed the noodl es it lost its shape somewhat and I'm going to re-wet it and full it more and try and stretch the noodle shapes back in. I used a fairly thick piece of pre-felt scrap for the base so it sits quite nicely. I think next time I will make a rectangular resist in the normal, polystyrene resist way, and then once it's felted I'll put it on the noodles to shape and dry it. OR, I'll cover the wrapped noodles with bubble wrap before layering. Sorry, I don't know what's going on with these photos.

Such fun experimenting with new resists and remaking projects! I have a huge stack of felt samples that I will be using in the 2nd Qtr. Challenge. Happy to have a purpose for these lovely, sad bits.

smiff - I think your idea of using a flat resist and then using your 5 noodles as a for shaping and drying will work best. Look forward to seeing the next one.

Smiff, it's got such beautiful colours and I love the energy you get from the way you lay out your fibres. A bit like large broad brushstrokes full of vitality. I've been experimenting with the delightfully named Modpodge for getting shaping into vessels made from a flat piece of felt. It was originally a dyeing experiment that I liked and wanted to make into a bowl. The pleats and creases are held in place thanks to the modpodge on the underside leaving the untreated top to loosely drape. www.flickr.com/photos/24232165@N03/26321740175/in/dateposted-public/www.flickr.com/photos/24232165@N03/26321739865/in/dateposted-public/I was wondering if you could bind your vessel around the 5 noodles and then modpodge it so it holds the shape. You do lose the softness of the felt but it doesn't colour it in any way and it makes for a good solid and sturdy base.
