I think the embroidery really makes the bag. I enjoy stitching on felt. Could you just stitch the cording to the inside top edges on each side? That way you wouldn't see the ends and you could do a tight buttonhole or blanket stitch to keep the ends from fraying?

Ruth, I'm worried that stitching the cording to the inside would not be very strong. It might end up looking (on the outside) like a real mess.

How thick is your felt? You should be able to hide all the stitching in the felt. You'd have to be careful and it would take some time to do it but I think it would work. But I'm sure there are other options. Don't they make some findings to cap the ends of this type of cording?

I love the embroidery Elizabeth, the gold is absolutely gorgeous (I can't resist a bit of bling! ) I like your idea of the grommets, personally I would tie the cord in a knot. What material is the cord? if it is synthetic you might be able to melt the ends in a flame to stop them fraying, alternatively a whip knot over the end of the cord will prevent it fraying and you could uses some more of that lovely gold thread to make a feature of it! This is an example of a whip knot

A very beautiful bag Elizabeth. I'd go with Teri's knot. I've done handles this way and haven't used a grommet - they often come away - I just make a hole and buttonhole stitch it to prevent it stretching, then insert the cord and knot it. The knots can go inside or outside depending on your desired look.

What a gorgeous little bag elizabeth. I too really enjoy embroidering on felt and I think it does add definition and another dimension especially when felt is quite flat. I am wondering, would modpodge be any help in sealing the ends of your cord?

Elisabeth, this handbag is just gorgeous. So beautiful embroidery! I love the matching cord. Hope others can help you with advice on how to attach it to the bag.

One of my latest daily doses of fiber was this blouse which was "commissioned" by my grand daughter. She is becomming more and more demanding in requesting particular details. In this case she wanted something with long net-like sleeves, flowers, hearts, sun and butterfly. Quite challenging for me: I decided to felt the blouse on cotton gauze and use fine merino wool. As for applications I used different colours of merino wool, silk and viscose fibers and silk fabric. The felt is quite thin but very elastic, so technically I am quite pleased with the result. The project was quite time consuming: I had to make sleeves first and let them dry, then I attached them to the main part. here are some photos: www.ipernity.com/doc/724735/41427596 www.ipernity.com/doc/724735/41427588 Here you can see how thin and transparent the blouse is.http://www.ipernity.com/doc/724735/41427590

Elizabeth, I love the bag and especially the ginkgo leaves! You could sew it on then cover it it with another decoration? Or use a knotted approach thru a small grommet.

Teri, I couldn't see your knot. But I think I know what it is. The link kept bringing me back to the post. Probably the iPad.
Nada your "commissions" are beautiful. I can't wait for my granddaughter to start asking for things. Thin and transparent would be best for her since she lives in California. :-)

Teri, is this what you're telling me? www.netknots.com/rope_knots/common-whipping Your link sent me back to the board. Would you tie a knot, then finish the end this way? Thanks for the link, viltmaaraan. Ruth, I have seen findings for the end. That would work if I knotted it or sewed it, I guess. I just had it in my mind to put the cord thru the holes so that it could be used as a doubled handle or single cross-body. In that case I'd need to fix the cord end-to-end. The whip stitch might work. I'll look at the blanket stitch for the holes instead of a grommet. The cord is man-made, so it could be melted. I think I like the mod-podge or finding idea too. Great ideas, everyone. Thanks for the help and the comments.
