I picked up some wool yarn at the thrift shop and did a little test to see how it would felt. It did felt but i used too much roving in some places and it does not show. I used a flat resist. Want to try it on a ball or balloon putting the yarn on first and then roving. the lighter color is the yarn

Frances, your test turned out well. You never know. I bought a wheel of wool thick and thin yarn once. It was marked wool, it definitely wasn't. It wouldn't dye or felt.

Here you go, Teri... my weird January dose of fiber so far. The Christmas garland I made in January. I have enough hoarded Christmas fabric to make one to wrap around the house!!!

Now that really IS getting a head start in Christmas 2016! Will you be buying gifts next The garland looks great, are you tempted to leave it up all year round? The test pot looks lovely too Frances, very nicely shaped.

Your test pot looks great Francis. I have done the pot an a ball before. It's an adventure. I found it much easier to start flat and then move to a ball. it does help if you put some soap on the ball first. it helps keep everything in place as you work. Put the ball in a small bowl to get it up off the table while you put the wool on. We used the panty part of pantyhose to put over ours. If you have to do it on your own stretch the panty over a bucket and then push the wool covered ball down into it . Works like a charm.

The test pot is pretty Frances and where the yarn got a bit buried it actually looks like a pleasing design feature!

Elizabeth - I like the garland but now I'm panicking because I feel that I too should be prepping already for next Christmas!

Cool idea Elisabeth, to make a garland and use Christmas fabric. Nice pot, Frances. You got a nice shape with flat resist and you are lucky that the yarn felted in well. Personally I wouldn't bother making a bowl over a ball.

The pot looks nice, Frances I must admit, I don't know what a Christmas garland is Ann, did you ever get around to making a vessel over a gym ball like you planned years ago?

Today I've been itching to start the screen printing workshop with Ruth, so I've been scibbling patterns and ideas in my sketchbook between spells of carding and laying out wool for a new "flame" hat

I have made vessels over balloons and balls before - I really like doing them that way especially if I want a specific design - yarn, silk scraps, etc. stick to a soapy ball so I get a better idea of what I am laying out. With a flat resist I never manage to get the design the same on both sides. See shadyrr.wordpress.com/2015/07/04/bowl-on-a-ball-washerdryer-felting/

I still haven't tried making a vessel over a ball but I've added it to my to-do-one-day list. When using a flat resist, make your design on one side, then take a photo on a tablet or phone to have nearby so that you can refer to it when laying out the design on the other side.
