Thanks to my husband who has patiently made one with plastic combs which I broke on first trial!........ then re-made using metal combs. There seems to be quite an art to pulling the wool off evenly and without getting 'stuck' somewhere. And I don't particularly want stripes so I'm experimenting with laying the wool on in mixed layers rather than a layer of each colour in turn.

Wonderful, Marian. I wish my husband was more of a DIY person. So I'll have to make it myself (one day).

Cool - what did he use for the metal spikes?

Metal 'afro' combs. 8 of them screwed onto a wooden frame secured with G clamps. We followed someone's example posted here - sorry I can't remember whose post

A Hackles not to scary but combs are. Great looking DIY. careful not to pull to hard or you will bend the tines.

Please excuse my ignorance but what is a hackle and what do you use it for?

Unfortunately the link doesn't work and I can't work out how you would use it from the original photo.

I have never used either combs or a hackle but I have friends that do. they tell me the hackles and combs made form nails can be a cheap way to try them out but real professionally made ones are much better. They are stronger. It is very easy to bend the tines. they make a tool for straitening them. certainly cheaper works for me when I want to try something out. Now maybe your wood workers can make you better ones too. There must be instructions on what to use and how to make them.
