Nuno (pronounced to rhyme with moo (as in cow) is the Japanese word for cloth. Any kind of cloth. That’s where nuno-felting originated, according to most sources. But I think that for some folks who have tried to felt cloth to wool, they have discovered it’s difficult, and so they equate nuno-felting with felting very light silk scarves. Just my take on it. ;-))
