I’ve been working on slow-stitching projects, but I did do some felting while in Breckenridge, CO. Working on a blog post for the Studio, but in the meantime, here’s a teaser: IMG_0734 by catwycliff, on Flickr

Continuing with the fishy theme started by Galina/Felicity and adopted by Lyn, here is my contribution. A wall hanging of a reef scene. I have used some hand dyed pongee silk so the shimmery ripples look like water and some hand dyed prefelts for the fish. Now it is dry, I think the lower half (the coral) needs more definition, has anyone tried using Markal paint sticks on silk nuno felt?

I have used Markal paint sticks on silk. They work fine but take a while to dry. I haven't used them on wool or nuno felt. But I think they would work. Try a test sample first.

Lovely colors in your fish piece, Teri! Have never used paint sticks on wool or silk. I usually add detail with hand-embroidery.

It's a really pretty reef scene and well coloured. I like the contrast between the dark fish and the larger fish - how have you formed the markings on the fish?

Thank you ladies, the markings on the fish were needle-felted trilobal nylon mixed with merino. Since I took this photo I also added some angelina (I can't resist a bit of sparkle!) and some Kap merino shading to the fish. I had a bit of a play with some silver Markal paint, it looks ok but I think it needs some red/orange to lift the piece and balance the pink fish at the top....

My daily dose--it’s all about threads and thread holders. I was re-organizing my fiber boxes and noticed some threads had grown long. The photo shows my Grandmother’s "Tidee Maid” thread spool holder, which I was fortunate enough to inherit. Has some of the old threads still in it, too. Remember Belding & Corticelli cotton and silk threads? Second item in the photo is what I believe to be an antique wooden bobbin shuttle or weaving shuttle--don’t know much about either. It’s now an extra thread spool holder for me. Ah, nostalgia. Antique Threadholders by catwycliff, on Flickr

Those are cool Cathy - There is no way I could fit all my thread in those two containers though.

I love the weaving shuttle, that is so beautiful I would want to put it on display but I'm with Ruth, it wouldn't even hold a tiny fraction of my machine threads, let alone all the embroidery floss.
It's lovely that your grandmothers tideemaid has gone to someone who will really appreciate it too.

I do remember Cathy! I probably have some around here somewhere. I'm with Ruth and Teri, I'd need a much bigger holder for all my threads. In fact, I have two or three big ones in different places.

I wouldn't be surprised if that Hoarders show turned up to ask me about my embroidery floss, Teri, they started doing packs in Poundworld, I got one, it was really nice, then I noticed they had lots of different packs, some solids, some variegated, then I swear they changed the shades slightly or included some unusual colours just to make me buy more packs.

You can never have enough embroidery floss, right? Somehow I ended up with much more floss than regular sewing thread. Just to set the record straight, I do have about a dozen more spools of thread, but they are the big, clunky ones that don’t fit into either of my thread containers. And tapestry thread--I’ve lots of that as well although I haven’t done needlepoint in 30 years.

Please don't tell me that Zed, now I'm going to have to go rummaging in Poundworld and my embroidery bag is already bursting at the seams, do they sell storage too....?
