Hi I am new to the forum but wanted to ask a question. I recently saw a lovely large felted rug which someone had made. It was around 2 metres by 3 metres. Alleged it was handmade and all in one piece. Would it be possible to create such a large piece by hand? If so how? I think physically handling such a large piece would be very difficult? Thanks x

Hello. melro and welcome to this forum. I think making a felted rug would be very difficult to do it with just one pair of hands. Just imagine, you need a large space (increase the dimensions by 30% at least to allow for shrinkage). Then there are several layers of wool, soaked with soapy water. I cannot imagine one could handle it alone. Have a look at this interesting video (the sequence on making a rug starts at min 9). www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhvNtEwQfX4 There were were several people working on it.

Yes, it's possible, but difficult! I keep thinking how heavy the work would be once wet. I have seen people dragging felt on a roll behind a horse - that's the traditional way that yurts were made, I believe - we don't really have room in our houses for that! For things like scarves that are too big to fit on your table, you can layout partway, wet, start gentle rubbing, leaving the ends dry, then roll up & continue the layout.

You can make large felt. I made a 16 foot diameter yurt covered with felt. We used the tractor to pull the rolled felt around the field to save some labor.
But it's possible to make larger pieces by yourself. Takes a lot of time and hard work but it is fun and satisfying when you finish.

One thing that's often overlooked is how heavy a large layout of wool is after the water is applied!

Wow! That is quite a lovely film…thanks for the link, Nada! I did not realize that was Judit Pocs until I saw the large lizard, which I knew I had seen before advertising a class offering which I am very keen to take with the master. I will send a link under workshops/fibers/festivals, etc.

Hi Thank you all for your comments and thank you Nada for the video link (very interesting) I see what you mean you really do need some strength. Maybe the large rug is too energetic for me now! I think its going to be a cushion for now! Thanks again!

I have seen the videos of them making rugs in Turkey(I think) they take along time and a lot of work.
