I could be wrong but...
...I've read the Etsy announcement and it appears to be that if I sell an automatic digital download to an EU country, the VAT will be deducted from the price of the download...
...hang on...
...that means that I am paying the VAT - NOT the customer... I can't adjust the sale price to include VAT because the automatic download takes place before I am aware of the customer's country of residence.
Well done Etsy - not.

Tossers. How they manage to run a business is baffling, they're a bunch of half wits.

It looks like they removed my 2nd comment saying they had no right to take my money and give it to other countries and that they need to have a system where the buyer identifies their country before they buy so the VAT can be added on to the price, and that they should also have an option for people to opt out if they want to manually email the digital file.

Yup - saw it Zed. I don't think they'll like my comment much either. I emailed 'support' and I had a long flannely answer back that said absolutely nothing - doh!

me too Ruth. they need to make the buyer responsible for paying the VAT themselves if they buy out of country

Judging by the comments no one cares if it is done properly, how it affects them/their turnover or their customers, as long as they don't personally have the hassle. I've been surprised just how many people have been quick to ditch their digital sales.
I'll be ditching the instant download thing if etsy don't sort it out.

So many people happy to be shafting their customers. Hopefully those of us not adding up to 25% extra will get the customers who don't think they should pay extra because of their location.
If etsy don't offer an easy alternative we'll have to do extra listings.

I have been very upset with Etsy for awhile, and it’s nothing to do with the VAT. First they allowed mass foreign imports of the cheap and crappy variety, then adult sex toys and see-through underwear…then coy cards with silly sayings. They used to have a section where you could protest these mass-producers and other folks who have obscured the meaning of handmade and vintage. I’d be gone from their site if there was a suitable alternative, but I haven’t found one in three years. There! Now I feel much better.

Cathy, I remember before I even joined etsy, people who spoke out about the mas producers/cheap imports etc on the forums would get banned. The see through underwear, feathers on sticks, tacky, 'wacky', kitschy stuff was always their aim, for those 'artists' who have to advertise it by wearing outlandish garb to prove they're an artist. There used to be a site called 'regretsy' funniest site ever. They would find the most bizarre items on etsy, weird, crappily made, expensive tat. Unfortunatley it's closed. But, in the spirit of regretsy: www.etsy.com/uk/listing/88172030/custom-made-wizard-or-fairie-staff-or?ref=sr_gallery_15&ga_search_query=staff&ga_order=most_relevant&ga_ref=auto2&ga_explicit_scope=1&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=galleryNSFW (yonic) www.etsy.com/uk/listing/208345507/art-nouveau-necklace-nouveau-style?ref=sr_gallery_2&ga_search_query=yonic+necklace&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallerywww.etsy.com/uk/listing/211351854/crochet-beard-hat-budenovka-for-men?ref=sr_gallery_12&ga_search_query=knit+mask&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=galleryDr Who: www.etsy.com/uk/listing/107014697/handmade-crochet-dr-who-tardis-kindle?ref=sr_gallery_41&ga_search_query=Dr+Who&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=galleryMerle from Walking Dead: www.etsy.com/uk/listing/201983425/pdf-knitting-pattern-merle-dixon-the?ref=sr_gallery_1&ga_search_query=walking+dead&ga_page=4&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery
