Time to start a new monthly daily dose of fiber! And having said that, I will be traveling this week so will not be posting my daily dose of fiber…I will be counting on all of you!
To start things out, I was given a shopping bag filled with yarn balls--all kinds--some full, some partials. These balls have been acquired by my sister and her daughter over the past 20 years. Of course, no labels. Two I can identify as wool for sure, but the others are unknown fibers. I am not a knitter, and I have never been into crochet or macrame. Anything with knots and knit/purls drives me loopy (pun intended).
Any ideas for identifying the fibers? I know--I can do samples, add as embellishments to felt projects. How do you use old yarn balls?

You do a burn test. different fibers react differently to being burned. if you google it there are instructions of how you tell which fibers are which by how they burn.

However, if the yarns have multiple fibers it will be hard to tell. I did the burn test a while back on some yarn I got a garage sale. Most of it had some poly, nylon or acrylic in it and beaded when burned even though I could see there was some wool.

Any ideas for identifying the fibers?. How do you use old yarn balls? If I'm buying odd bits of yarn to use as inclusions in felt, I don't worry what it is. Providing the yarn strand has something that wool fibres can latch onto then it's good for me, e.g. boucle yarn or a fluffy 'art' yarn.

Now that I'm back home I have to start catching up. I worked on some batts to use for pods as gifts.

Hello Marilyn, I look forward to seeing your Pods... Is there a book out there on to create fancy art batts or is it just good old trail and error until you get the techniques down? Smile

I think its trial and error. You need to make sure you have enough wool in there and distributed thru the batt so it will Felt.
