When you are doing machine embroidery can you make a paper pattern to follow or is it better to use something other than paper?

You can use paper but if you do more than one line of stitching in an area, sometimes it is hard to remove the paper. I use a water soluble fabric. Here's a tutorial I did on using the soluble fabric. You can get it at places like Jo Ann's. thread sketching tutorial

I've just posted a photo under 'machine stitching' Ann.
I used an air-erasable pen to mark the outline shape of the antlers onto the fabric. However, the pen is not much use on felt, so if I needed a guide I would first stitch around an outline of paper or card - it's then quite easy to free stitch the inner detail.
The writing on the banner in the sky I did freehand - 'joined up' writing is much easier to do than it looks - it just needs a little bit of practice.

I wish I could play with stitching on line on the picture so I could see what if the pattern I want to do will look like I think it will before I do the sewing. I don't want to wreck the picture
I will go have a look at the tutorial Ruth thanks.
