Thank Ruth, i had a look at that stitch this morning and i find for us beginers there's not enough info on how to start. I realise its similar to the feather stitch but now i have to search for a better set of instructions lol

I'm completely lost. Sometimes it seems easier to look at the stitch and work out how it's done than to follow the instructions.

Now I'm really confused. Your middle and bottom one look just like feather stitch, do I keep getting the wrong links or something?

lol yes i know that stitch is confusing and mine does look more like feather stitch but its supposed to be an open cretan, i looked at a couple of different sites apart from the link ruth put up and this is what it said, they also say its similar to feather so go figure lol i just spaced them different . When you look at the feather and the cretan they are almost the same , they both follow 4 lines so i guess it just depends on how you want to do it. I just worked the closed one and then some open ones ? beats me lol

I found this video, and it all made sense www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdWN9gESCjEIt'd be nice to be shown how to start off/finish because this stitch looks weird at the start/beginning

Well, Zed, that looked simple enough! Thanks for that link.

I think the confusion comes in because so many stitches are done different ways.

I have to take a photo of the one I did in my paper stitch book. I'll try to remember and post it after I get home from work. Cretan stitch by fiberruth, on Flickr This is lines of open cretan stitch done on top of each other to form a pattern.

Once I'd watched the youtube video it made sense, and I understood the video you posted too, Ruth, so thanks for that. I still have to work out how to start so that the open one doesn't look wonky on the ends Cretan stitch by zedster01, on Flickr I like it in the pattern like that, Ruth, and the page background is really nice.
