Yeah, scrim isn't quite so easy to get as muslin or cheesecloth. I eventually got some from Whaleys too (I wasn't happy because they added VAT after postage) I did come across some site selling it by the metre, but have searched my links and can't find it.
For something similar but different, those cotton gauze swabs you get in Boots are great for felting with, much more open weave. They're not very expensive either, and dye really nicely.

Unbleached is fine. It won't make that much difference on the dyeing process. It has a weave of 50 which is still pretty "heavy weight" for cheese cloth. If you want the kind that is really loose weave use 10-30 weave.

Any Australians on this site might like to know that Lincraft has 50% off storewide this weekend..I found silk chiffon, lots of scrim and some roving among other bits and bobs- a big spend up but well worth the drive there. Even sewing machines and such were half price I was amazed.
