Thank you Lyn for all this wonderful information, I'm off to cut and paste into a word doc, cos I know when I need it I'll not be able to find it - you are so generous to write all this out :-)

I don't know about Security, Lyn, I hadn't thought about it.
Ann, doing instructions like that is actually a good idea. If the text or photos can be understood without each other, then together, it'll be really clear.

Here's another question. How do you deal with all the white space you end up with? I am inserting pictures into the instructions for the kit. In order to keep the right words with the picture I end up with a lot of white space.

Are you working in word Ann? You can right click on the picture and change the setting for wrap, square, etc. that might help you situate the text and pictures better.

Don't be frightened of white space Ann. It's inevitable that sometimes you will have more picture than accompanying words.
A bit of white space can have the effect of simplifying the page and making it less 'scary' to the reader.
Marilyn is correct about formatting the photo. e.g. if you want a photo on the left-hand side of the page with writing to the right of it, a photo formatted as 'square' can be moved into position and the text will sit alongside it. Try this: Open a new document and write a few sentences. Insert a photo under the text. Select the photo and format it to 'square'. Then you can move the photo around the page - move it up towards the text and you will see the text automatically shift to the side of the photo.

Thanks, that's a cool trick. I think I have it sorted. I haven't decided if my pictures are to big. It will be about 20 pages when done.

I like space. I think I organise mine according to what doesn't make my eyes flicker, or cause optical illusions. So I kind of stick to alternating sides for instructions, aligning the photo to the left, adding a text box to type into, to position to the right of the photo, then in the middle, aligning the photo to the right, text box to the left etc. Until I need a large photo, then centralise that.

I have been putting the picture under the instruction. centering the picture. Trying to keep all the pictures the same sized lined up under each other as you move down the page.

I agree with Lyn about white space. In advertising it's used to highlight and yes it's less scary especially now a days when people don't read much.

An interesting thread as I am working on tutorials myself at the moment. One way of facilitating the alignment/placement of text and photos in a Word-document is to insert a table, without visible boarders/lines in the final version. With e.g. 2 columns any number of rows that you need, it is easy to put the text in one cell and a photo (to go with the text) in the cell next to it. Each step in the tutorial on a new row, with an aligned photo. Did that make sense? At least it prevents photos from jumping around all over the page became of some unknown setting that you cannot figure out how to change. :-)

I have also found the app LiPix (formerly InstaFrame) really useful. I take my photos with my cell-phone and can then quickly put together a number of photos into one frame (photo), adjusting cropping at the same time, and then insert that into the tutorial. I use the same app for all photos that I upload to my blog. It makes it easy to insert several photos instead of one.

I do that for text, Zara, it's the easiest thing I found for positioning text exactly where you want without Word shifting everything around.
