Hi all
I am new to this so forgive me if I got the challenge wrong. I have looked up Stewart Stephenson and have tried to create a hat after the fashion of the artwork called "Redemption Song".
I also read read a blog on the forum showing how to do a concentric hat and tried to fashion my hat in this manner.
I have used merino prefelt as the base - purple/blues - and then added more flashes of colour with merino, silk and dyed mohair locks. I did dye some of the fibre used - the mohair locks in particular were using the Ashford Dye - Scarlet. I think it turned out more orange than scarlet however still works well.
I am going to a three day Spinning Muster in June and we have a hat exchange. I think I will use this hat.
Should I use a Milliners Stiffener to harden the concentric circles or just steam them into shape?
Thanks for the challenge and the inspiration. I had fun doing this one and hope to continue to participate in the challenges.

Lyn I love the colours that you used in the Time Warp. It was a really inspiring piece.

Nice hat Michele. I don't use a stiffener, if it's completely fulled it should hold its shape. We'll see what others have to say though.

What a superb entry for the challenge Michele. I just looked at 'Redemption Song' and your lovely hat captures it beautifully.

Fabulous hat, Michele! You and Lyn have really set the bar high for this second quarter challenge.

The hat looks great and is perfect for the challenge. I agree with Judith - I don't usually use stiffeners on my hats and just full them very hard. Once the concentric circle ridges dry, they will stay in that shape without a stiffener. I like your color choices and the scarlet sets off the blue nicely. (Scarlet red is usually on the very orange side.)

Nice hat it is a great interpretation of the challenge. I don't use stiffener either. You can steam them and work them a little in place if you want but as Ruth said they will hold there shape once dry.

Here is the result of the 2nd quarter challenge. As i said I wanted to make something usable and decided on a handbag. Pity there was no proper light to take a photo of a flat piece when I finished felting where the composition could be better seen. But since I had to fold the felt to get the shape of the handbag and let it dry I can now show you the picture of my half-finished handbag. The first picture has been taken to show the bottom where I hope you see the stems of flowers and the other shows the bag from the front. It is not finished yet, I need to buy a ring-shaped handle and attach magnets I wanted to avoid making the lining separately and simply placed silk (or polyester?) fabric on the template (I found the template on the net) and then placed three layers of merino wool on the top. For embellishments I used small pieces of silk fabric, silk noil and pieces of prefelt as well as wool, of course. I'm quite pleased with the outcome and Stephenson was a good choice for inspiration.

Your handbag is great. I think it is very reminiscent of Stephenson's work. Please do show us the finished bag.

A very pretty handbag - I love the colours - and what a good idea with the lining! The challenge has been answered both with the colour and design and I'd love to see it finished.
