washing a fleece is not hard. the first think you do is make user it was skirted properly. That's removing the really short bits and the poopy parts from the fleece. Then you just need to soak it in hot soapy water. you can do it in peices in one of the bags for delicates. just soak in a bucket of hot soapy water. Leave it for about 30 min then remove it. Just let the water drain out. do not squeeze it. Then either wash again in hot water or rice in hot water by just soaking in a bucket with clean hot water. you always want to add the wool to the water not the other way around. never agitate the wool when its wet. and always keep the water temperature the same or go up and never down to prevent felting.

I'm with you Carole! even though I'm a grandma I'm not ready to be Baba, elder or whatever the culture wants to call old women. :-) I'm sure some of the members can help you. I'd be intimidated by the whole fleece, too. Sounds like a lot of backbreaking work which I can't do now anyway. But from what I've heard spinning is relaxing. Or you could turn it into roving and do more dyeing. :-)

Ann you make it sound do-able, I may have to say yes to the offer of the fleece and try it out - new skills, tho' I must tell you a funny story, I went out this morning early as hubby had got the car stuck in frozen snow and was trying to go for his train, so I ran out in pj's and slippers to help, out on the main road (a country lane really we are the start of a village) got the car moving, then I went head over heels on black ice, with my hand taking to main impact of the fall, what a dough ball, not only did I look ridiculous but now I'm bringing attention to myself - and not in a good way!!! so the link here is, my hand hurts a lot and the thought of hauling wet fleece isn't on the cards today, but a giggle is :-)

I hope the hand heals quickly! I guess felting is out for today as well. :-(

Washing an entire fleece at once is kind of hard work but doing it in small portions is much easier.

Don't think I'll tackle a whole fleece anytime soon, but I admire those who do!

Sounds like something I would do. breaking it down into small batches is much easier than dealing with a whole wet fleece.

I once fractured my wrist like that. I did not realize it until about 6 weeks later when someone shaked hands with me and I almost passed out from the squeeze. If it doesn't feel right, get an Xray.

My hand slipped recently when I was loading the washing machine (front loader so I was bent down) my hand slipped off the counter and I cracked it on the corner of the machine. It hurt, but 'got better' then suddenly I started feeling 'shocks' from slight touches and it hurts to move. I know I won't bother going for an xray though.

Zed, is it swollen? Perhaps try wearing an elastic brace for a while so you don't irritate it further. You probably bruised a bone. I did that three years ago on my leg, the hurt to the touch finally went away, but the bruise has faded but still there. I hope it heals soon.

Zed go have it seen too. You have national health so there is no excuse. You donn't want to end up with more problems. Do I sound like your mother?
