I like citric acid in the house too. I dye out on the gas BBQ in the summer. I use vinegar in the house if I want to clean out a yucky smell. It deodorizes the air. it smalls like vinegar while its cooking but then the house smells clean.

I haven't used Rit, but I'd first used Idye which is the same thing in powder form. I imagine it's good when you're dyeing mixed fabrics or unknown content. I learned a lot on the Jacquard website and forum. They are very good about answering questions,

I didn't know that about RIT, I love RIT for dyeing cottons. Dylon is the main dye brand here, but compared to the old stuff, the new stuff is rubbish, most of it rinses out. RIT is brilliant.
How do you use it as an acid dye then, Ann? Same ratio of dye to vinegar/water as other acid dyes?
And, is it possible to use is on cotton, then add vinegar and dye wool?

RIT has been around forever! I remember when just a child my mother dyeing curtains or sheets to give them a "new life." She used the RIT dyes in the washing machine, The fabric would have been cotton, as I don't believe polyester had yet made its way into our consciousness.
Great question, Zed, about using RIT for both by altering the mix. Looks like another experiment…shall I ship you some RIT?

One time, probably 30 years ago or more, I had to go to the laundry mat and wash some bedding. The person before me had used dye in the machine, probably RIT, and all my sheets came out a light blue color.

I hope you liked blue Laura. How inconsiderate. They probably didn't want to take the chance in their own machine.

The attendant there told me that lots of people used the laundrymat to dye things, probably for the simple reason that they didn't want to use their machines at home. Yes, people can be very inconsiderate!

Thanks for the offer, Cathy, that's really nice, but I can get RIT here, I got some off ebay a while ago. I recently discovered our local Tesco supermarket also sells Kool Aid in the Jamaican section too

Sorry I haven't come back to this thread in a while, for some reason I didn't get any notifications for it (and you lovely people have indeed talked some more about it, which is great!) Zara, I really enjoyed your photos - you daughters look so happy with their new vests And those sheep are adorable. And That rabbit just made me laugh - he really seemed like he was just keeping and eye out for whomever tried to steal his eggs! Cathy, did you end up trying to dye wool again, this time adding the vinegar later?
