Inspired by Amanda beautiful cushion, here is a felted alpaca cushion I did last week. I uses prefelt alpaca from the mill (the one that they put 2nd and 3rd quality fiber) for the cushion itself and alpaca roving for the flower, leaves and stem. It has a 3d effect with the stem running to the back. That was a first cushion for me.

It came out really well. I love the colours and the stem running around the back is great. I like the ruffley edges. It softens it.

Quality is subjective. Everything has its uses. They pay extra for short fiber merino.

I love the edges too It looks really nicely felted and I bet it's really soft I thought for Alpaca the seconds and thirds were just from places like belly and neck where it grows shorter? It isn't less soft is it? I have had some weird 'stiff' parts from alpaca fleeces I've bought, but don't know enough to kno what that is/where it came from, though legs springs to mind?

The alpaca fiber used is this piece is from adults alpacas ( 6-7 years old) Still very very soft, but not like a young adult. Most people that does not know alpaca fiber at all will think that it is so very soft and in a way it is. But never like a young quality breed alpaca. The micron is higher as it gets older. Before I had alpacas, I order some ''top quality'' roving from ashford and it was soft but now that I have something to compare with that fiber, is is really incomparable at all. You can have alpaca fleece from a young alpaca and it will still not be that great. It's like in anything, quality as a price. The breeder makes a difference in the final quality of the animal and of the fleece fore sure.

Thanks for that Crealou I got some alpaca tops a few years ago, supposedly top quality too, they were pretty awful! I know alpaca felt can be 'hairy' but this stuff was weird. I made a horrible hairy felt bag that was like woven grass feltingandfiberstudio.com/2012/02/12/hairy-alpaca-and-a-merino-vessel/I sewed on it later on and it was like sewing on human hair or something, quite creepy.

Thanks for sharing. Some people with no scruple will sell alpaca mixed with lama too. It is full of guard hair. Alpaca have some too but not too many if they are breed correctly. Poor quality fiber comes from poor quality animal. Alpaca or not. Talking about something creepy, I found this on the web. It is in french but by the picture you will see what I mean....''Fur coat'' wet felted from.....men chest hair!!!!! Beuark...! I wonder what micron they are...lol www.petitpetitgamin.com/2013/06/25/un-manteau-fait-100-avec-des-poils-de-differents-hommes/
