Is there anyone here who knows for sure the difference between silk paj/silk pongee and habotai? I buy my fabrics from China, and while I'm sure the people I communicate with know the difference, I find their answers a little confusing...and I don't want to keep asking the same question over. Today I got a package with 4.5mm pongee and 8mm habotai. I asked this seller if they had paj, and she said "yes we have pongee"...I took that to mean paj and pongee were the same fabric (and I have seen that stated on internet searches too). Today I am also talking to a fabric printing company in China..who have said "we have 5mm paj in 45 meter rolls; but if I want pongee they have to order that and I need buy 500m"...I take that to mean they are different!!!...I also asked this seller the difference between their paj and the 6mm habotai.... I didn't really understand the answer but I think she said there is "no comparison". Looking at the fabric I have on hand; although they are different weights, I think the pongee (paj?) is woven more openly...but this could be the difference in weight too?...I'm no expert on fabrics... but now that I'm buying a bit I kinda want to know what I am asking for

from what I have seen people use them interchangeably. I have never seen a definition. the only way to know for any particular seller is to get labelled samples. The mm is the weight but the weave can be different. Paj and pongee seem to be used for the lighter weight fabrics but I get 5mm habotai. I would like to find silk gauze that has larger individual threads and a more open weave. Can I ask who you order from in china. I haven't found it cheaper then Dharma Trading sells it.

I just bought plain silks from Chengdu Howell Trading Co., Ltd...these were the prices, all fabric is 140cm wide: 3.5mm gauze $3.75; pongee 4.5mm $4.50; and GGT (georgette) 8mm $6.80... the georgette is most open weave of them and for 8mm it seems closer to the gauze in thickness than the pongee...prices are US dollar. The pongee is a lovely fabric... much shinier than the habotai. I am also looking at buying printed silk from Hangzhou FY Textile Digital Print ...they are about $13 for print on paj 5mm...I will ask if they sell unprinted as well as I suspect they may give a better price...however they do have a higher minimum order....to understand some of the communication difficulties - I asked for a gorgeous marble type print on habotai... she said it was a print they do on their scarves, but could do it on 5 meters for me...when it arrived I thought the print looked quite different so inquired.... she said "yes when it stretched over 5 meter it looks different"!.... I naturally thought it would be repeat pattern...she thought otherwise.

That silk mesh looks lovely. it looks like they are low water immersion dyeing. It is very easy and very satisfying to do. I just did some scarf lengths today. Where are you?

I would think the best way to figure this out is to get samples. I do think part of the problem is in translation from one language to another. Will they send samples? If you get it figured out I would love to see close up photos of the various types.

I would like to understand what you paid for shipping on the silk.

I would like to understand what you paid for shipping on the silk. I think it was US $40 per kilo...to New Zealand...to get an idea 45 meters of paj was going to be in the 1 kilo bracket... I have 80 meters which is in the 2 kilo bracket. New Zealand is an out of the way place and shipping to here is usually expensive...at least China has good rates compared to the rest of the world!!!...shipping from Europe often costs more than the product

I order my silk from Dharma Trading Company. You can look at their website to see if you can discover the differences in weights and silks. You can also call their customer service. They are very knowledgeable and gladly spend time answering your questions. I have called before about the differences in weights and silks. I get 8mm Haboutai from them for painting silk scarves. It is a light weight silk that is good for painting!
