Congratulations Lindsay....obviously the imaginary 'not-for-sale' sign is working! Re the foam....sorry I don't remember. I,ve also made smaller items over foam off-cuts and make-up sponges too.

Oooops this was supposed to be in the same post above. Ruth - I checked out the link to your chair boulder....wow, hard work, but effective. Did you ever post a photo of the finished item as a chair support? Also what was the inspiration - a broken chair leg?

Making a pebble mat has been on my long, list of things to do. I look forward to seeing your finished project.

If anyone has found a tutorial on wet felting a pebble rug with foam, please let me know. I’ve been googling but have only found ones for sale.

Marilyn, I believe we had discussed such a tutorial here on forum a year or so ago. It may be useful but I'm rubbish with forum search, sorry!

I think this was the video we all looked at: pebble rugsAlthough she says she will show you how to make it, she glosses over the actual felting bit. Maybe she uses the 'felted soap' method but swaps foam for soap?

But I’m puzzled other than sewing them together how they make up a rug, Galina, I did a search, too, but didn’t come up with anything either. Lyn you’re a pro!

I had a good look at the available info and the answer does seem to be stitching the pebbles onto a backing such as open weave hessian. I’m not sure what the fabric is that’s used in this video - maybe something that’s used for tapestry or hooked rugs? Photo here www.ipernity.com/doc/2373440/48044168I wondered if you could use anti-slip underlay that you put under a rug or mat. That might be a good idea for the anti-slip properties. Someone else commented that they’d just sewn the pebbles themselves together but that this doesn’t work so well. Maybe they’re difficult to get completely flat? Let us know if you have a go.

Thanks Lindsay. That makes sense and the anti slip backing is a great idea. I’ve just been thinking about it. I’m not going anywhere for awhile it’s —18 degrees with a wind chill of -50 going down to -27 tonight. i wondered if it would be possible to felt the stones part way then put them on a wool backing and finish felting them together. Just thinking.

Hmmm. Interesting idea. Sounds tricky but it would be great if you could do it.

Marilyn, I would half felt "pebbles" then stitch them loosely just to hold them together and while doing it stitch them to prefelt, so that the pebbles and the backing are at the same stage (approx.) of felting. It usually felts together better than if you try to attach half felted part to a loose wool. It's just a thought.

I am sure the video I saw she stitched the pebbles to each other. I think if you worked upside down to start the felting to a backing would work lay the pebbles down then some prefelt on top and you could give them all a few pokes with a multi-needle tool and then felt them back to the pebbles. Hope that makes sense.
