I’ve been thinking about 3D wet felted shells for a while and recently posted my first oyster shell on the Daily Dose of Fibre thread. I’ve now made 2 others so took them out for a little photo shoot yesterday afternoon.

Wanted to show the inside of this one as you can see some structure and hopefully also some shine

Your shells look very natural with their cousins. The inside looks good too. Do you have plans for them or are you experimenting?

Thanks Ruth & Lyn. I will probably re-full the one on the right in the first picture as I’m not completely happy with it then I will go on to other shapes of local shell. I’m still thinking about a snail type shell and think I have a plan for the resist. I have an exhibition coming up early Feb which I’ve titled ‘At the Water’s Edge’ so they will get an outing there, whether for sale or not I haven’t decided yet. I’m enjoying the problem solving and use of multiple techniques to manipulate the shape.

They sound perfect for your exhibition. It's always good to have the public see new items even if they aren't for sale. Then you can judge the interest level and whether or not they would sell.

They look great. The inside looks good. You can see the structure and I imagine it is better in person. They look really good there on the beach. Will you do some pebbles to go with them? One thing is for sure if you use them just for display and atmosphere then they will definitely sell. Have a good high price in your head ready for after you have said they are not for sale.

You’re right, of course. I’d forgotten about our highly successful ‘you can’t have this’ imaginary Etsy shop! I still have some pebble placemats and could make some pebble coasters, that’s a good idea. I’ve felted real pebbles before, which is straightforward, and small solid wool ones but don’t know how you do something larger that is filled. Are these made like a vessel round a resist then stuffed & sewn closed or can you felt round something like foam? I’m going to ask Mr Google how those pebble rugs are made.

In answer to my own question, looks like either wool stuffing or pieces cut from a ‘felted’ wool sweater with roving wrapped round then put into stockings/tights/panty hose and felted in the washing machine. Might have a go.

Love your shells Lindsay and the photograph on what looks like a sunny afternoon. They will look great in your exhibition.
I've successfully hand felted over roughly shaped foam before but it was only fist size. Doing a larger version...mmmm....I'd be inclined to wrap wool around the foam, encase it with tights and put it in the washing machine, remove the tights carefully (as they will have adhered) then put it in the tumble dryer (wrapped securely in a towel to help the shape otherwise it will have a tendency to be totally round) , before weighting it into its final shape....I might try this in a spare moment!!! Just an idea.

I was thinking of pebbles dryer ball size or smaller so yes wrapping a core or using all roving to make the size and colour you want and then using the panty hose and washer/dryer method. after the first time through the pantyhose do stick. I think I would put them through the washer a second time in nylon again. they don't stick the second time. Then shape and put to dry. That way they wouldn't be round like a ball. You can do quite small ones this way too. I have done it for little balls to use as inclusions.

Many thanks for all your input and ideas. That felted rock looks like a real labour of love, Ruth.
I was thinking of sort of fist size. I’ve seen some that are light and spongy so clearly not solid roving and thought the ones people sew together to make a mat or rug would probably be similar. Antje - did you use a particular type of foam? I probably won’t actually get time to do this before the exhibition but I can think it over and maybe make some later.
And an update on the shells - I’ve had contact today through Instagram from someone wanting to buy one to use as a giant pincushion! Might look nice with pearl-headed pins.
