I’ve acquired some wool when buying a second hand carder. Much of it is tops / rovings, which I usually work with, but there are also quite a lot of coloured rolls of rather course stuff and I’m not sure what they are or what I can do with them. I made the mistake of putting some through the carder - not a good idea as the fibres are short & lumpy and stuck to the drums. Any advice? www.ipernity.com/doc/2373440/47550844www.ipernity.com/doc/2373440/47550846

I expect Zed will know this one!
I've just bought a small amount of dyed 'corriedale' from a craft fair and it looks very much like yours - but as I work with merino 99.9% of the time, I don't qualify as a good judge!

What is this wool I can't tell, most probably corridale, perendale or other coarse (30mic+) wool, not in tops, but in carded batts. I would look through the range of the shop you got it from to see what similar is on offer. But again - it's a carded batt.

These look like Norwegian C1 batts that a lot of needle felters use to me. But it really could be any of the more coarse fibers.

Thanks all. Are they used mostly for needle felting? I can’t check with the shop as they were ‘free’ with the second hand drum carder I’ve just bought.

The stall I bought the corriedale from belonged to a needle felter ... and it looks as though it would needle felt easier than the merino wool tops I have.
I understand that Norwegian C1 is good for making hard-wearing felt.

I believe that any of these options - Corridale, Norwegian etc are good for more traditional felt items like bag, shoes. It's good for needle felting because it's springy.

They should work for either wet or needle felting.

the Corriedale I get is not short but it has been combed into top. what you have loos like roving. Its in a rope but the fibers are arraigned more like a batt. I would make a small sample with it and see if its hairy or lump or smooth. The C1 cross that I have seen wasn't particularly short either. It was courser but made a very smooth wet felt when made into a hat. Course fibers and batts are much faster to needle felt.

Hi Lindsay The wool looks very similar to that in my 'coarse' wool collection, even down to the colour! As I was in town today I photographed how I purchased this wool which comes from Nepal and is packaged in colour collections. As others have said it is good for needle felting but I have very successfully used it for wet felting vessels (it was a relatively inexpensive way to gain several colours for my daughter and some friends to try wet felting) and it felted quite quickly. oh dear....I’m a total newbie at posting....I had my photos all prepared but they are not stored online! So I can't attach them. Sorry. Ruth - if you are reading this would you be able to upload them from an email for Lindsay to see? Thanks.

Thank you, Antje. Sounds like the same thing so I will have to have a try at felting it.
I’ve sent you a personal message (see top of page) with my email address if you want to send me the photos.

Took care of the photos Antje. I love your vessel, it's combination of colors and the hidden stitching inside.

Hope the wool info helped, and good luck with the wet felting Lindsay. Thank you Ruth for attaching the photos- you are a genius! Ditto for my Avatar. Hope I haven't caused a breach in your storage capacity.
Thank you also for your kind comments about the vessel. On another occasion I will perhaps show it in it's entirety.

No worries Antje! I put them on our regular blog/website and just linked them here. So that doesn't take any storage capacity here.
