Today I set up the room for teaching my first felting workshop tomorrow. I’ve been sorting wools, yarns, silks, threads and equipment during the week which took me longer than I’d expected but has been rather therapeutic and should mean things are a bit tidier and much better organised when I put everything back. It also involved the inevitable purchasing of yet more storage boxes with the promise that I’ll sort out the bags of off-cuts, samples and failed projects so I know what’s there and can get at it (or even, dare I say, throw some of it away)! I just need to finalise my printed instructions and draw up a very short feedback form and I’m done. Does anyone else use a feedback form for their classes? www.ipernity.com/doc/2373440/47433432www.ipernity.com/doc/2373440/47433436www.ipernity.com/doc/2373440/47433434www.ipernity.com/doc/2373440/47433438

Phew! Workshop went really well yesterday - lots of positive feedback (definitely recommend using a simple feedback form) but it was exhausting!

I’ve posted some of the photos from my workshop yesterday - I’m having some difficulty posting more than two per message but if you’d like to see more they’re on my Facebook page.

Doh! I'm not on facebook, but thank you for posting those photos above. All the felt is wonderful. I love the tree/landscape - I couldn't stop looking at it for ages.

It all looks great Lindsay, glad it went well. I have put together a feedback form for my class on the 20th of this month, and my friends filled one in on the free workshop I did for them last week.
I am also supplying them with an info sheet of the materials used on the day, a list of the tools of the trade, bubble wrap, tulle etc, and a suggested list of suppliers and books. Then if they want to continue it at home, they don't have to try and remember things from the day.

It’s a public page so you can see it from google - you don’t have to be on Facebook. Yes, the tree was lovely. Actually, they were all lovely in their own way. I will amend my plan for next time as virtually no one did what I’d intended (small experimental prefelt piece to be learned from, cut up & used for main piece). They all started with something bigger & more finished that took too long and that they were too attached to to cut up. So I either accept that and get them to just make one piece or really go strict and push through the plan. Still, the feedback was very positive and everyone seemed to go home very happy.

I did a feedback form (for me) & a step-by-step summary sheet with photos for them to take away to remind them what we’d done. One of the participants is a friend so it will be interesting to see whether she found these helpful. Hope your workshop goes really well.

Sounds like your workshop went great Lindsay. The photos look like everyone is having fun and the results are wonderful. I think the feedback form is a good idea, you can also ask for an email address on the form so that you can send out future class information etc. to your former students.
In regards to students following instructions, that always seems to be a bit of an issue unless you are very strict with them. Someone always wants to try something different. Either way works so go with what feels comfortable for you.

My natural instinct is to make them do what I want (I definitely have a control freak streak) but I think it’s better to let it go so long as they enjoy it & are happy with the results. Many of them ended up trying to make 2 big pieces which they couldn’t finish in the time, which wasn’t ideal. I will amend the plan for next time to try to push the small sample first approach, with the emphasis on small. I avoided taking samples with me as I think it tends to reduce creativity but with hindsight it would have made the concept of using prefelt clearer and more convincing. And yes, I did leave a space for emails if they want occasional future messages (we have to be very careful here to get explicit permission) and I was also careful to give them on opt-out from appearing in photos (though none of them took it).
