I felt totally different to Lindsay and Ruth. I enjoyed the commission I undertook because it totally took me out of my comfort zone and stretched me.
When you said penguin picture Lindsay I thought small ones scattered along the coast line, not a full blown close up! I think it is looking great thus far!

Lindsay - I love the penguins! The background is fab and I'd like to see the finished piece. You were brave to take the commission. I'm with Ruth on this - I don't like commission work because what the artist sees in her mind is never going to be the same as what the client sees.
So I take my hat off to you Tracey for being able to not only deliver the goods but to actually enjoy the process.

Thanks Lyn! I may or may not have mentioned that I was told the recipients of the commission liked 'hand made', 'unique' and that they themselves were 'quirky', I mean, a dream, no pressure first commission or what??!

I think I have a foot in both camps. I thought long & hard about how to achieve the right effects for the background & did really enjoy the stretch. For example, I cobweb felted some slightly course natural brown merino for the darker bits of shrubbery then laid a mixed silk and cotton yarn for the main spikey stems as I know it tends to absorb a lot of the shrinkage within the yarn (it sort of gets fatter) rather than becoming very wiggly when fulled.
However, the pictures I normally felt are based on direct observation of the birds and the land / seascapes. I love the colours and textures but also the sounds, smell and feel of the places. I look at how the birds move and stand in their environment, what happens as a wave starts to break, or when the water hits the pebbles and how the sky reflects on the sea. When I’m felting I think I sort of relive those experiences as I try to put them into the work. And that’s what I miss when trying to recreate a photo of somewhere I’ve never experienced. I have no feelings for or about the subject and it becomes like copying rather than creating. I don’t hate it but I don’t really enjoy it.

The background is terrific and I think the penguins seem a little playful. I’ve never done a commission so I can imagine working with someone else’s idea would be a tad difficult because you may not see what she sees as being playful. But at least you had a picture reference.

But at least you had a picture reference. Thank you and quite right. It’s a friend who has commissioned the piece and she’s a lovely, sentimental person so I know the photo is special to her as she likes that it seems the penguins are holding flippers and she was on holiday with her much-loved partner. I originally suggested I might be able just to get the photo printed on canvas but unfortunately the penguins are rather out of focus.

I said I’d post the final penguin picture so here it is. I haven’t yet trimmed it for framing and may be able to include a little more of the background in the final picture. I feel it’s turned out ok and I’ve sent the photo to my friend who sounds delighted. People often think my pictures are smaller than they are: the felt will be between 50 & 53 cm square (about 20 inches) and the frame is 64 cm square (just over 25 inches). www.ipernity.com/doc/2373440/47326740

The penguins turned out great Linday. I love how the background sets them off and they are indeed "holding hands" which is cute. Have you gotten them framed yet? You're using your usual frame?

Thank you Marilyn & Ruth. Yes, the usual square oak veneer box frame with ivory mount. I’ll take a picture though it’s likely to have a bit of glare.
