A neighbour gave me some Samoyed's fibres she'd combed off her dog. I thought it might felt well - but then I do not know what object to make actually. I'm afraid it will retain the strong smell the fibres have ... any experience?

I think that the water and soap used during a wet felt process would get rid of most of the smell. It did so with some minimally-processed sheep wool I used recently. I made a felt flower with my cats' fur just to see how it worked. Kind of ugly, since I have a tortie (white, black, orange) but it worked. Good luck and let us know what you do with it.

Olive soap bar makes a wonderful smell to felted items, but not sure how it'll work with non-washed wool. It might end up smelling wet dog. Definitely worth a try though. About what amount did you get?

I have had experience with dog fur spun and knitted into hats. They were very smelly and definitely smelled like dog. Not sure how the fur was processed though.

The spun pet hair I have seen has been smell free. I would think if you are wet felting it, it would be well washed by the time you were done. I am not bothered by clean animal smell though.

I had a go at felting my Labrador hair a while back. It was very slow to felt. I basically just made a ball that I was planning to make into a kind of snowman bauble but I lost interest!
It did not smell once felted.

I made a small felted vessel out of golden doodle fur with great success. I agree with the ladies, no dog smell after it was felted. Can't wait to see what you make.

I've wet felted Samoyed's fur, together with some sheep's wool. I placed the one on one side and the other on the other side. It seemed to felt well in the combination but when I dried it and started to smooth it many dog's hairs came out, andI was using just my moist hands. I gave the flat piece I made to the neighbour but forgot to take a photo. I'll ask her to let me take a photo and will also ask her how the felt behaves. It has no special smell - for me and the neighbour. The dog, however, smelled it very intensely sensing something unusual!

Thanks for showing us. Looks like it felted well. Did your neighbor say that it is still "shedding" dog hair?

She couldn't tell because she doesn't use it yet. They were amazed to see their dog's hair become fabric, they had no knowledge of felt whatsoever.

The neighbour told me they use the felted piece as a chair pad and love it for its warmth. The felt still sheds individual hairs but we both expect this will stop with continuous use. Now, I don't know whether Samoyed's hairs are prone to be shed when felted or I made something wrong.
