After a week or more of melting I am off into the fresh snow to teach techniques for intermediate felters for the first time. Lets hope I have the timing right.

My daily dose was making a journal cover. I calculated the shrinkage to 1.45 and it came out way too big. So I made three little coin/whatever purses with the offcuts. I had three (fortuitous) lovely ceramic triangular buttons in my stash and they finished them off a treat.
I also went along to a lovely craft fair in town in a really nice church. It was a very inviting setting indeed. I could just see all the hard work that had gone into creating the pretty stalls. I enjoy being on both sides of the table.

Here's a few samples of ice dyeing. I dyed 10 silk scarves and some cotton fabric. These are the silk scarves. And this is one of the pieces of cotton fabric.

Ruth, your iced dyeing is lovely. I love the surprise of pulling it out and seeing what magic happened in the jar.

After quite a while of ok machining so far, I have been fighting with my sewing machine today. The bobbin thread kept on breaking. also the top thread kept bunching up in the casing below the plate - what a waste of thread! This is new to me. I consulted the manual and checked:-
a) The casing was lint free - it wasn't so I cleaned it. b) The tension wasn't too tight - I loosened it a little c) The bobbin was threaded correctly.
These helped a little but I still got sporadic breakage, rather frustrating. When I fill a bobbin up with thread, I can sometimes do it a little quickly, maybe that isn't good? but it is only what I have been doing for ages now. The thread is good stuff by the way. Let's hope it is just having a blip. Any tips would be appreciated.

Check all around the area when the bobbin casing is out - sometimes a tiny piece of thread can get caught at the back and it causes the top thread and bobbin thread to tangle. Sorry if this sounds too obvious, but is the machine threaded correctly? Are you leaving the presser foot in the up position whilst threading (to release the upper tension discs)?. One thing I've always done since school days is to put the bobbin in its case so that when you pull the thread the bobbin turns clockwise (when the bobbin and the open side of the bobbin case are turned towards you). I don't load a bobbin until it's absolutely full - I leave a bit empty.

Usually when my thread does that, I usually re thread and it must have been because I threaded the machine incorrectly. Lyn has given some good tips of things to check.
