Hi
i have a stash of mohair tops that I was hoping to felt with, but have been told that it will not felt and is too soft. Is this the general experience?

Hello Maureen - good to see you here! I hope the forum members will share their mohair experiences with you.
I've found that mohair is ideal for scarves etc, but too soft for 3D items (that need to be firm to keep the shape) and too soft for items such as bags/purses. I haven't tried it to make felt beads but in theory it should be ok.
Mohair tops will make good yarn if you spin it.

Thanks Lyn. Yes, the original intention was to spin the yarn and use most, if not all, for weaving. But I just can't get my spinning going, which is why I thought of felting it! So maybe I must just persevere with the spinning!

Mohair felts it just doesn't make a hard felt. I find it itchy no matter what you do with it.

You can always use it as an embellishment.

Or you could mix it with another wool that felts more strongly.

Why not make a scarf? It should be very soft to wear I assume.

I use it as an embellishment on top of other wool. In this case merino. It gives a lovely wavy surface texture.
