Hi! I have successfully used cracked mud on some flat felt pieces, but would like to try it on a 3D vessel this weekend. I mostly use the Rosiepink flat resist method to make my pods.
What is the best way of laying out the fibers and cracked mud ''grid'' resist so that the pattern is seen all the way around the vessel? Should I only cut out the resist once I have finished fulling and shaping my vessel? I hope that makes sense...

Haven't tried this on a pod. Looking forward to seeing your results though.

Hi Steph!
Hmmm, you have got me thinking there! Are you aiming for a continuous pattern around the whole pod, or would two grids edge to edge either side suffice? what shape are your aiming for?, and where are you cutting the opening? I would have thought you will have better chance with a cylindrical shape, cutting at the top of course, rather than a circle with the hole in the middle. A circle with the hole at the outer edge would be fine.
What are you using for your resist? I use pond liner which is bendy, however I could envisage a bit of a fight to try to cover it with fibres around the sides, I may be wrong. I would be tempted to take it edge to edge firstly and then decide if the technique would play ball as a wrap around.
I would take the resist out once fulled yes, then continue shaping the vessel/mud.
I hope that makes sense too!, and good luck, please post a pic, would love to see it!

Ambitious! Good luck with the pod - I've only tried the cracked mud on a flat piece.
I wonder if the technique might be easier on a balloon resist?

I think you can wrap it around fairly easily especially if you are using tape. I would as Tracy said make the cut out at the edge of the resist rather tan in the middle like you would for a beret. I would however suggest taking the flat resist out as soon as possible and insert either one of the blow up balls or a balloon depending one the size of the vessel. Then to hold it all together well, put the underwear portion of some pantyhose over it and felt and full it from there. Can't wait to see how you do.

I've seen some on Pinterest but haven't tried it myself. I've used painters tape on flat surfaces and it works well. Keeping track of it may be a bit more challenging on a rounded vessel. I usually lave a tail, but that may not work on a pod. Maybe a stitch with thread? Good luck, I look forward to seeing your results.

Yes Marilyn, a stitched thread would be ver helpful in keeping track of the resists.

I have been wanting to this also. Look forward to doing it. I have worked flat and used packing plastic stiff for resist replicating the effect of cracked paint. I don't understand the talk around painters tape , has this been used as a resist or to hold resists together.?

The painters tape is used as a resist.

WOW! That's really cool - thanks for sharing that site! I love to watch other felters styles. Is that a pool cover she's using? What is everyones thoughts on using a pool cover as opposed to using bubble wrap? Maggie

I am glad to see I am not the only one who thought that Marilyn! No pain no gain! Excellent process though.

A pool cover is just heavy bubble wrap. It is still very flexible. I don't use either.

I use a pool cover for large, heavy projects like a cat cave for example. I have also used it with nuno felting and it worked fine with that too.
