Here is my newly felted beach scene. I thought I would ask you ladies suggestions regarding finishing it off.
I am undecided whether to FME to define the fence ? (that's the main indecision)
I think it definitely needs a couple of yachts in the water ?
A few grasses in the areas either side of the path ?
A straighter horizon ? (yes I know that!!)
A man eating shark ? (only joking...)
Anything else ?
Thanks!

I don't think the fence really needs more definition but it wouldn't hurt it either. The foreground and middle ground are very similar so maybe grasses in the foreground would be a good addition. I'm not sure you need boats but that's up to you. It looks good and Jaws would be a great addition

I don't htink it would hurt to define the fence a bit more the similar colors make them sort of melt into each for my eye. A few yachts, grasses on the path would be good. The horizon is fine. If you add the yachts it will break up the straight line. Looks good.

It's gorgeous already. Yes, define the fence but not all around every plank, perhaps just on one side and top, or partial definition on sides and top, or just make some vertical marks?
Print off some photos of your beachscape and use a black pen to emulate different ways of FME - saves a lot of unpicking.
Without boats or any other signs of human life, the picture is very serene. It feels as if I am the only one there looking out.
The horizon will sort itself out - it's just a matter of how you hang it.

Aw thanks Lyn! I had settled on defining the fence. However I would have sewed nearly all around every plank, up to parts with foliage, but no, your partial defining, with a hint here and there is brilliant, I would never have thought of that, thanks.

Yes, minimal marking is the way to go otherwise the fence becomes the total focus and I want to look out to sea.

Absolutely! Especially with the few days of sun we UK-ers are being treated to this week.

I agree with the comments here already - I love the serenity of the scene. My eye wants to be drawn through the picture, and for that I agree with the partial fence definition and some more details in the foreground which maybe lead the eye past the fence, so a few tall stems which go above the fence height and lead into the dunes beyond.
I've toyed with the idea of making 'fuzzy felt' pieces which can be added on with velcro or removed, so Jaws could still be a possibility. You could then move him around so he's not always in the same place!!

Oh Marian you have just triggered a childhood memory by saying fuzzy felt! That was a box of crafts I had back then, I can't quite recall what you were supposed to do with it but that was definitely the name. Ringing a bell with anyone ? See - I was destined to become an addict!! How lovely to recall that, thanks!

It's a very nice picture. looks like a lovely place to spend and afternoon with a picnic. I like the fence the way it is but can see the argument for partial FME. For me the grassy areas are to much all one with no definition. so some embroidery there would be good, boats would be good. How about at a buoy and a ship on the horizon.

Thanks all. As I was looking at it I thought that some large arching grasses would have been good in the bottom foreground below the fence. However, I would have preferred to have put these in at the beginning and FME around them maybe, I really am not a very interested/patient needle felter.

What if you added the grasses with FME? It works very well for grass. Use a variety of colors so it looks natural.

Yes that's an idea Ruth, thanks. I did FME two patches of grass, only about 2cm high and wasn't keen on the look, but I never thought to go larger just with FME. I guess then I could needle felt a little wool amongst it, rather than as a whole. I do have an assortment of greens.

When you say grass, what height do you think of? An easy way to needle felt grass is to add the wanted colors to the backside of the piece, and poke through. When done you turn it to the front side and "comb" the fibers that got through upwards or in the wanted direction.
You adjust the length of the grass with how far through the felt you poke the fibers. Might be smart to do a test patch first.
