I don't usually add a layer of fabric to my felt pictures, but I began wondering if they would benefit, especially larger ones?
Does the fabric just make it stronger or does it help to prevent puckering? I have some cotton muslin which could do the job nicely but I'm wondering if it would interfere with machine embroidery?
The piece will eventually be stretched over a box canvas which will also give it greater stability.
Why would you use or have you used a fabric layer?

I usually use a fabric layer in things like slippers or bags to give them more strength. If I was going to stretch it over a canvas, I don't think it would need additional support. I don't think the cotton muslin would interfere with the machine embroidery though. If there was a lot of stitching planned and it might buckle the felt, then I would use a stabilizer.

And in your experience what fabrics are the best to use Ruth please?

I usually use a heavier cheese cloth, perhaps 90 weight. I am not sure what that is called in Europe/UK.

I usually use a layer of cheese cloth in the middle of my backing but I do not stretch them over canvas. I usually use wide Velcro across the top of the piece to attach it to the canvas and then 2 small pieces in the bottom corners to hold it in place. I think it help to prevent sagging when the piece is hung.

I can't see why the muslin would interfere with machine embroidery ... But I'll leave it to the experts to decide whether it would add anything useful! 😊

If a felt picture is going to have quite a bit of free motion embroidery on it then that, with the stabliser on the back, is usually enough to 'stiffen' it up for hanging.

Would anyone see the need to add fabric when making pods/vessels? Obviously steering clear of the area to be cut.
