Lyn unfortunately they don't make those rattles anymore. I looked everywhere and had to settle on the scoop. :-)

Lyn unfortunately they don't make those rattles anymore. I looked everywhere and had to settle on the scoop. :-) You're right - they've gone out of fashion - I should treat mine with a bit more respect because it would be difficult to replace. I found mine in a charity shop. Although a lot of charity shops have gone 'up-market' and try to look like high-street shops, we still have a few of the old, smelly, rummage around type of charity shops and that's where to find things like cheapo plastic baby toys and other delights. Another source of useful old things is a boot-sale. Look on the bright side - your scoop doesn't sound like a pair of maracas - the rattle drives my husband insane.

I also found that the toys made today don't last. Yes, treat your rattle nicely. It's a good thing you don't make pods for a living or your husband may hide it on you. :-)

I'm still on the look out for a rattle! I looked at The Works for maracas or something similar, but nothing there either.

I have a honey dipper I use for stretching and pushing from the inside.

I have taken on board Jill's advice regarding water temperature. I would start with warmish water for comfort more than anything, but I have swapped to straight from the tap, I think it may have helped.

The mushroom would be a good shaping tool. As for being wood, well I have a wooden kitchen spoon that survives being used in liquid and gets more 'polished' as the years go by - the only thing that would kill it is leaving it soaking in water for hours (ask me how I know). You're right - those darning eggs are still available - easily found this one (the ad doesn't specify what it's made from) darning eggand as you say - no annoying rattling!

A darned good idea! I've used a pestle - wooden handle and porcelain "business end".

I've only ever used centrifugal force, to finish shaping a pod, with my totally round rattle.
If I used a darning egg, that is more of an oval, I presume I would get a different shape? Another thing for the 'list of things to try'!

Yes I guess wooden spoons stand up to being washed in the dishwasher...... Straight off the blocks with that pun Judith! The darner given to me to try was my friend's grans, so straight away I thought I can't ruin a family heirloom! ! but she insists I give it a go, so I will. (Also, quite rightly, she said darning socks was something she would not do anymore ! )

Well I don't think that Jill's tip regarding not using warm/hot water too early has helped - I KNOW it has! Nice one Jill Now, if she would she could make suggestions about the ones on my face.........

Tracey, with regard to face wrinkles - if your eyesight has deteriorated as much as mine, then the answer is simple.
Before you look in the mirror, remove your glasses. Works for me!
p.s. You may think, looking at my avatar, that I don't wear glasses. I do. Everything is a blur without them. But my husband persuaded me that a photo of my mug was vastly improved by removing my glasses.

Lyn, I have been blessed with really good eyesight so far, so I don't have any specs. I would struggle of late with tiny print on spice jars etc. I think what works best for me is limited mirror usage!

Oooh, I just recently bought a mushroom ...believe it or not actually for darning! Hubby won't throw away his old jumpers and wears them while full of holes if I don't darn them! Now when I've repaired the jumpers I'll have another use for it! 😄
