Let me preface this post by admitting how much I hate making loops. I really hate it. So I decided I needed a project to change my mind, and I think this did it. I used an extra fine merino (DHG) and some basic chain making knowledge to put this together. The first step is to make single links. I wrapped thin pulls of the merino, about 8" long, and wrapped it around a rolled up bamboo mat. Gentle rolling up and down the mat-bundle til the fibers marry. Once the loop was secure, I moved it to a smaller diameter rolled up mat for fulling. I made 15 loop/links but only used the best 12. https://www.instagram.com/p/BR1Zv02B4Sq Then I made sets of three. A little bit tricky since you have to thread the dry wool through two damp links AND then wrap it around the bamboo mat roll. Once I got all the sets of three, I put those together in sets of 7 and eventually connected those. It definitely got challenging to hold it all together (Sorry I couldn't do all that AND take pictures of the process). https://www.instagram.com/p/BR3fvZih-jf I'd guess the whole start-to-finish took about 5 hours and I lost about 6 links due to the learning process (and possibly too much water?) But I now have a new appreciation for loops and a chunky necklace to prove it! https://www.instagram.com/p/BR8ceUsB-kv

Wow, that's truly amazing. I cannot imagine how you managed to make rings while they were looped to others... mind-blowing for me!

Oh my goodness, that's a real statement jewelery! Seriously impressed. I can see so many options with this. Love how your knowledge about a very different material comes in handy when felting. Wonderful pictures! The necklace looks good on you

Way to go, perseverance is the key. Sounds like finicky work but the end result is great. Thanks for walking us through the process.

It must have been very tricky making the 3 and 7 links and then joining those all together! I take my hat off to you. Wonderful necklace!

Thanks everyone! I've been thinking about making more... if I can stand it. The idea of making one out of white merino and ombre dyeing it after it's complete is too delicious not to try.

Wonderful idea Shana the links are great. I can understand your dislike of making the loops. Kudos to you for hanging in there.

great job . I wouldn't have thought to wrap them round a bamboo mat. The necklace looks great. I am not a fan of making snakes or rings. I don't think doing more would change my mind. Can't wait to see the next one with its dye job.
