Sometimes objects needs a stiffener. we have talked about that before. remember; dipping in buttermilk, wallpaper paste, appret. but also the use of acryl medium mixed with water. I thought Ann asked Ruth when to use it, before drying or after? What is the best way to stiffen the brim of a hat (except hatstiffener ?

I have found that adding the stiffener when it is still wet works the best. But I agree with the elbow grease suggestion from Zed.

I.m.h.o. the best way is wall paper paste mixed with more water than suscribed. No stains. It is easier to rub it in when the felt is wet but I have found out you can use it also when the felt is dry. You just have to rub a little harder.

I have never tried it myself, but was told that some felters use roller blind stiffener in spray for interior décor items. Something like this I believe: Stiffener

I used a powdered shellac and alcohol mixture to stiffen (meant for millinery use) in a workshop. Hated the stuff, but it works for the application. The acrylic medium works well only if it never ever ever gets wet... and I mean ever!

I would have thought shellac would take up moisture and go white if there was high humidity or wetness. have you tried it is high humidity or rain?

The acrylic medium works well only if it never ever ever gets wet... and I mean ever! Interesting, Shana. I have quite the opposite experience: once I was drying a felted piece on a ceramic plate and some of the stiffener remained on the surface of the plate. I could never remove it (even after scrubbing and washing the plate in a dishwasher). Another time I was drying felt on a towel and that part of the towel remained stiff as well.

Halay, yes it loves to stick to glass too! I'd used it on a delicate/thin-walled light shade which then collapsed after a few days. When I rinsed it, re-blocked and reapplied the stiffener, the thing went full flop.... right into the trash.

Sorry to hear that Shana. I think I'll need to test one of my pieces and see how it behaves after getting wet.

Here's a link to a millinery supply house. www.hatsupply.com/sizingstiffeners.htmThe powdered shellac (called Hydrolac B-5) is in the top picture. It's a powdered shellac resin which mixes with water. I was taught to mix it with denatured alcohol so it evaporates faster but like I said, I'm not a fan of the stuff.
