I read in the book 'Fabulous Felt Hats', that M.Hvistendahl stiffens her projects by dipping the felt into skim milk according old Norwegian method .But that will smell awful or not?? Has anybody experiences with that method?

Haven't heard of that but again, can't imagine what it smells like when it rains on the hat.

I don't think I'd like to try that. I googled the question and found this from 2009 from Pam de GrootQuote "I use just normal milk to stiffen mine. The smell goes away in time. It's just a bit yoghurty for a while. If you bend the stiffening it breaks though and you have to do it again. I have the hat damp so it will easily wet down and then dunk it in the milk. Squeeze out and let it dry. The milk will tend to drip out the bottom edge for a while so I blot it now and then with a cloth till it stops. If it gets wet yes it will lose stiffening. I use it for sculptural hats, not really for every day wear. You may need to look at millinery stuff which has some nasty chemicals if you're looking for 100% reliability. I rinse all my work in a mild vinegar water after felting and have had no ill effect with the milk." Unquote.

I'm with you both on this, think I will stick with putting hot water and coffee into milk, not hats....

It looks like it could be glue water. I certainly wouldn't use milk either.

If so, it's obviously mixed with water and best guess is 50/50. We need a Russian speaker please.
