Well here it is at last! I opted for applique in the end. Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions!I'm pretty happy with it in the end. (I actually completed it at the end of last year but I can't do the picture BB code thing on the iPad for some reason and kept forgetting to do it when the PC was on! Now I just need to do something so that I can hang it - I want it free with rough edges - not framed - so I guess some sort of sleeve will be the way to go. Untitled by Anne Hickley, on Flickr

Well worth the wait Anne! Gorgeous sunset but still showing intense light in my humble opinion, and the gull has worked beautifully. I like to leave a lot of things free mounted, not everything needs a structured frame. Would be interested to know what you mean by a sleeve?

Hi Tracey and thanks for the kind comments! I think sleeve is a quilting term although I'm not a quilter. You attach a narrow ...um...sleeve ...to the back of the quilt, slide a dowel or other rod through it, and then hooks on the wall can hold the dowel and the picture/quilt then hangs slightly proud of the wall. Here's an example www.mnquilt.org/documents/HangingSleeve.pdf

Thanks for the sleeve explanation Anne. I am sure you will decide how to display it to it's best potential. If you fancy any driftwood to hang it, give me a shout!

It's dramatic and beautiful Anne. The whole piece has such a lot of 'movement'and the lone gull is perfect.

Thanks for the sleeve explanation Anne. I am sure you will decide how to display it to it's best potential. If you fancy any driftwood to hang it, give me a shout! Hanging it from a good sized chunk of drift wood might look great... But unless you're in the uk it might be a bit costly to get it! Are you beside the sea? Lucky thing if so! 😃

What is the width of your picture and we'll go from there.

Oh fab! It's about 40cm wide, so if you've got anything that big do let me know! Which bit of East Coast? We're in Norfolk now, but not coastal. We get up to the coast quite often in the summer though...but haven't found much driftwood. I do have a nice bit from lindesfarne but it's only 10cm long!

It was collected from a beach not far from Bridlington. I got it a long time ago and noticed how there wasn't much to be found a while back, you could have a mooch at Brid. Let me have a look at what I have tomorrow and I'll PM you.

Thank you! :-) I don't know that part of the world although I've holidayed further up at Whitby. My husband knows it though as he was a lighthouse keeper and sometimes worked at Flanborough Head.

Driftwood arrived safely and I think it'll look great - can't affix it this weekend though as we have a friend straying. I'll post a pic when it's done though. 😀

Beautiful Anne! You can always use bias tape for a sleeve depending on how large your dowel is.
