I was absolutely delighted when I came across this forum and I am so looking forward to participating and learning from the members!
I have not yet Nuno felted anything but have bought two shawls from two USA designers and will receive it next week ... really looking forward to that.
In the meanwhile I became totally fascinated by the whole process and have tried to learn as much as possible in the past week as I do intend trying my hand at it.
As far as I can establish, Nuno felting is not being practiced in my country - unless somebody can point me in the direction of somebody that does do it over here?
Also not sure if I would be able to find any tops or other materials locally and will most probably import everything.
Regards Linn

Welcome Linn! There are many good resources for learning to Nuno felt. You can check out our studio blog feltingandfiberstudio.com/tutorials/nuno-felting/. You can do searches on the blog for more articles. I wrote one on creating ruffles with Nuno. I personally learned from feltinglessons.com. She also has a wonderful ebook on Nuno. There are many good tutorials on You Tube as well. Many of us don't have local sources for materials, but there many good online sources. For silk and wool dharmatrading.com, other wool sources I've used - Paradisefibers.com, outbackfibers.com, feltingsupply.com, dreamspinfibers.com (Canada) and worldofwool.com (UK). I'm sure there are others our members have used. Have fun and be sure to share your work. We love pictures. And please don't hesitate to ask questions. I look forward to seeing your creations.

Welcome to the forum. You do not have to use silk to nuno felt you can use cotton as well. Any fibre really that has an open enough weave to let the wool migrate through it. Ask questions and post pictures of what you do. if it doesn't work post a picture answer will try to help you out.

Thank you Marilyn & Ann.
I have a load of questions regarding what kind of fabric to use <LOL> so will make up a list of what I have seen and put it to the Forum and then you can tell me what to walk away from and what I should buy :-)
For now I am just "buying with the eye" and still trying to figure out what I should spend my money on ... or not :-)
Regards Linn

Welcome, Linn. I love to visit thrift stores to find my nuno finer bases. One hint that I use I learned here is that if you can feel your breath through the fabric, there's a good chance it will accept the wool fibers. I have had a few misses, but on the whole this works well. There have been some beautiful pieces made with cotton gauze (scrim,..)

Hello Linn and welcome to the forum - it's a great place both for asking and giving help and for sharing photos of things made. p.s. are you the same Linn Currie that takes lovely doggie photos? Like this one?

Thank you Elizabeth. What you said about "feeling your breath through the fabric" is a perfect way for me to judge what will work and what won't! Thank you for that :-)
I had a look around on Etsy and found a supplier of hand-dyed scrim - looks great and price seems right too. Will definitely give her a try when I am ready to put my box of purchases together later this year.
Regards Linn

Hello Lyn Thank you for the warm welcome. Yes, that is me - I am a professional pet photographer and my images are published world-wide. You can view my portfolio at www.shutterstock.com/cat.mhtml?gallery_id=166090I have my own studio at home and my husband Robert is my greatest asset :-) I am an semi-invalid (due to osteo arthritis) and without his help I wouldn't be able to achieve all the cute poses that I have captured over the years :-) Regards Linn

They are fabulous pictures Linn - I especially like all those of the rottweiller puppies - I can only imagine how chaotic some of those shoots must have been!

Thanks Lynn. Chaotic ... absolutely! But such great fun and full of great memories :-)
The Rotties were quite a handful due to their exceptional weight!

Hi Linn, welcome to the forum The main thing about nuno is, don't let it daunt you! There's no right way or wrong way, or like Ann says, it's not just about silk. You'll get people telling you it isn't nuno if it isn't silk or isn't soft or isn't wearable and you MUST NOT EVER, EVER use hot water or do it on a Thursday or the wool will shrivel and die, but really 'nuno felt' is just a term coined for using (any) fabric with (any) wool. Elizabeth's suggestion is a good one, charity shops are great for cheap finds for experimenting. World of Wool in the UK is excellent for very cheap felting wool, fibres, dyes etc and the delivery/shipping is resonable too. I've never found anywhere with as wide a variety or as cheap. But try local wool too if you can, you'll probably be able to find something not in shops/on sites

Hi Zed - thanks for the welcome, words of advice and humour :-)
I won't be shopping local (South Africa) as we get the inferior junk from the East (they don't have to comply to any standards). Exporting from the UK means I have to have it shipped via postal systems and that is out of the question because our postal system is totally corrupt ... enough said.
So I'm shopping online in the US and having everything shipped to my shipping agent in Florida and once my money runs out, they box it all up and ship it off to me via courier service. So far this has worked out best for me.
I spend a lot of time making sure that I get best value for money.
Regards Linn

Do you have Fed EX in South Africa? World of wool ships with Fed Ex not the post office. I get my stuff in Canada really fast often less than a week form putting an order in. So odd what you say about wool. I used to buy South African top when I first started. It was much like corriadale or colonial in New Zealand. It's sad if they ship it all out.
