Hi! I need an advice how and when to use citric acid. I have been dyeing so far with regular vinegar but I would like to try citric acid. I'm not sure how much I should add and when exactly to add it in the dye bath. At the end like with vinegar? Thank a lot for you help.

I use a couple of teaspoons of citric acid to a large dye pot. I usually add it at the beginning but I am sure it would work either way. It does tend to get a bit clumpy so that's why I add it first, stir it in and then add dye and stir it in.

I use it the same as Ruth. Citric acid is cheaper because it is stronger than vinegar and smells better. how much you need depends on your water. If you can get PH strips you can add some and test. and then keep adding until you get the right ph. I can't remember the right PH right now.

I don't bother to check pH. Just a sloppy dyer I guess

Thanks a lot Ruth and Ann for your good advice as always. Next time I will know what to do. I have a lot of wool to dye this summer. Just last week i have dyed close to 22 pounds of alpaca wool.

I don't measure either but I try to tell people how to do it right even if I am sloppy.
