Great poppy, the french knots really set the yellow off.

Thanks for those links Nada, I just found out the theme for the 5 day Textile Forum I will attend in September is Blossoms,Buttons and Bows, so this subject is very timely. I have never made flowers but those vids make it look easy- though I know it is not.LOL

Josie, those are lovely poppies. I like making flowers for brooches too. Whenever I am in the mood I make several. Here are some black and red for a woman who ordered one so she can pick from www.ipernity.com/doc/724735/41777452. I do use a stiffener especially if the felt is very thin. I want to make sure the shape of the brooch will not get distorted if worn e.g. under a coat.

Thanks everyone.. I really enjoy making the flowers now time to try the brooch. Nada I checked your link and love the red and black flowers. They look very detailed. Is it all fiber or did you add fabric in there? What do you use as the stiffener? I'd like to try that. Any suggestion you can give for improvement would be greatly appreciated since this will be my first time making the brooch. thanks

Josiebrat, the red and black flowers were made using four resists. Basically I was following this demonstration : www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVGw5IdKQ1U&feature=youtu.be I used black and red 18 mic merino wool and some viscose fibers for embellishment. In some flowers I used less wool than in others so the flower was quite delicate and needed stiffening. I used acrylic medium, diluted with water in 50:50 ratio. I applied the stiffener with a paint brush while the flowers were still wet. When you apply the stiffener it still looks quite milky on the top but the white colour will disappear after drying.

thanks Nada for the explanation. I will give this a try if I'm working with thin flower. Will also check out the video.

My blowsy flowers didn't turn out all that wonderfully but a first try is always a learning process I guess.I too used the video as a guide with three resists. I didn't bother with stems as they will be added to hats later- perhaps.

This one is using silk hankies and still needs shaping with some glue.

I think they look good Sue. Sometimes it's hard to recreate what's in our head the first time.

That's it exactly Marilyn,I somehow had a different image in my head than the result. Wendy Bailye is great one to watch on Youtube and having seen her lovely flowers I won't be satisifed until I crack her techniques. LOL linkOne day I will find a workshop that Wendy runs that is less than 2000 klm away from me. She is one of Australia's top Felting Tutors and even Internationally I believe. Her studio is near Brisbane in the North of Australia. I will keep practicing because with this theme of Blossoms,Buttons and Bows for the fibre convention I am going to need a lot.I will also make make some ribbon flowers with button centres and sew them on - something? LOL....... Hmmm thinking.....maybe a wrap with a border of them? It is ok to be over-the-top with this one because they are a wacky crowd and love dress ups at the evening functions.
