I have been working on a cat cave for my 1st Qtr. Challenge. The first go was not so good. My bad for not felting for awhile! I began my second try today. Had all the equipment laid out the night before so I could get started early in the morn (…read: so I wouldn’t chicken out). Three hours later, I had all but one layer on one side laid out. Even after measuring and weighing the wool, I found that I was short on wool when I got to the final layer.
Spent a lot of time on the edges, my weakness! Made sure there were no “holes”. Rubbed the layers with the Tupperware lid that Marilyn gifted to me. Reverted to my mosquito netting for initial wetting out. Bubble wrap with the “lid.”
Tomorrow, time to add that last layer on one side, a few flat embellishments, and then rock and ROLL.

I am confused. Did you felt the first side and then you are adding the last layer?

No, I didn’t really felt the first side, but I did some rubbing between layers on both sides, trying to make sure the edge fibers connected. My layers are mixed batts with Navajo Churro tops, so I thought that would help. Last layer is actually Perendale batt (loganberry) from WOW. But I didn’t have enough, so I am adding the last layer today on just one side.
Have I confused you? Now I am confusing myself!

Ok I never found rubbing between layers worked for me. Seems to form a skin and the next layer has a hard time sticking to it.

Once I start rubbing any new roving seems to just slide around. I rub gently for up to a minute between layers as I find it helps. That's the wonder of felting isn't it? You have to find what works for you as there are so many variables such as: hard/soft water, different climates, different soaps, different wools (even maybe how old the wool is and how it was dyed) etc.....

yes we are all different. If I cover my felt with netting and try t rub with my hands the wool comes right up through The netting and balls up on the top. even if I have silk on top of the wool and then the net. That's why I started using the Tupperware lid. I noticed that about 1/4 of my students had the same thing happen. I now have a class set of lids.

That's the problem we had at the well being centre with the netting there, Ann. Yeah, I'm still a bit confused, Cathy Are you adding all the layers for one side first before adding any for the other side?

I layered the cat cave resist in the traditional way, but in-between flipping the felt package to add the next layer, I rubbed lightly through mosquito netting with Tupperware lid, as Lyn explains above. (With other types of wet-felting, I have always used bubble wrap for rolling and rubbing). Now, I was minus the last and final layer (on one side only) because I ran out of the Loganberry Perendale batts from WOW. If Marilyn lived a bit closer to me, I would have begged for her share of Loganberry batts. But not to worry. The last side was completed with “other” mixed batts and a scrap of loganberry batt. Perhaps one day soon, I will be able to post a photo of my completed cat cave. In other words, Incomplete at Present.
