leaves1 by pamd8, on Flickr I decided I wanted to try some machine embroidery on leaves, so I made this piece of wool. I cut leaf shapes out of pre-felt and used black as a background. Because the contrast was so definite, I added some black and light peach wool on top of the leaves and wet-felted the whole thing. So far all I have done is outline some of the leaves in coordinating thread. I've been working on the purse, so haven't progressed very much with it, although I'm thinking of adding a few flowers once the leaves are finished. I'll have to see how it goes. What's funny to me, in looking at the photo, all the thread outlines look the same color, black or dark. The green leaves are outlined in green and the turquoise in turquoise. The blues, light and dark, are outlined in a variegated thread. Oh, well.

Stitching on felt tends to disappear easily. You have to have a big color contrast for it to show especially if you only have one line of stitching. But I like the leaves so far and can't wait to see how you finish it.

Thanks, Ruth. I can't wait to see how I finish it either!
ETA: Thank you, thank you, thank you. I just re-outlined the leaves in yellow and it looks much better!

I really like the leaves - it's a nice piece to look at - very restful.
Have you tried going around the outline twice? Don't try to be neat. That can make the colour show better. Also, because felt is matt (unless you've incorporated silks) shiny threads show up really well (e.g. Madeira Rayon).

Thanks, Lyn. Ruth suggested another color, so I went around the green leaves with yellow, and believe me, it was not neatly on top of the green stitching. I am using nylon threads, nice and shiny! I'm doing some hand-embroidery now to see how that looks.

I'd love to see a photo with the yellow stitching so we can see the difference.

It looks great so far. Do we get to see the new stiching?

Hi Ruth and Ann, Unfortunately, Ruth, the new yellow stitching has now been covered with more stitching, and more stitching, and more stitching, and by now I have decided that this is a completely experimental piece as nothing is going to match anything else.
However, on the plus side, I have learned how to do some really interesting stitches on the machine, even though they are overpowering everything else. I'll try to take a pic today and show you the progress - or whatever you might want to call it.

leaves2 by pamd8, on Flickr Here is the updated image. The green leaf at the top has the yellow on the leaf veins. I don't like the blue multi-colored thread, so I tried to cover it in one of the leaves with different colored threads. Still not great. I'll keep thinking. I do like the free-motion zig-zag stitch. I'll keep playing!

Thanks Pam. I like the green leaves with the orange stitching. It's nice to just experiment, seeing what works and what doesn't. The only way to get better at machine embroidery is to practice, practice, practice. Free motion zig zag is a lot of fun, I like it too.

It's fun though isn't it?
My favourite so far is the green on green at the top of the picture.......waiting to see this piece again when you've done some more!
