Thank you Galina for giving this link. Meanwhile I found acrylic medium in one of art shops and have used it with great success. I diluted it in 30:70 ratio (acrylic medium and water). I was worried a bit at the beginning because the solution was white, looked like milk, but after it had been absorbed it didn't change colour on felt. Of course, felt needs to be wet before you start applying this stuff.

Good! From my experience with decoupage instead of acrylic medium from art shop you can use any good quality acrylic varnish from DIY store. Which is cheaper solution! But: it should be waterbased(!) and clear, not coloured. And yes, it looks milky first and become clear when dry. And no PVA, it could give a yellowish tint later.

Galina, what is PVA?

PVA - polyvinyl acetate, white glue, sometimes used in small crafts projects instead of varnish...

PVA is white glue like you get at school

I have use modpoge diluted with water on brooch (the brooch was dry when I applied it). White at first then turn clear when dried. But You do loose the soft touch of the wool which in not too good if you will wear the piece against skin.

I too used liquid starch on something I made - a vessel maybe - inexpensive and worked well. You can also by Argo Starch (Argo is band name) which is a powder and mix it for light, medium or heavy starch.

I like GAC by Golden as a felt stiffener. Sometimes you need more than one coat, but "less is more" if you want to keep the soft aspect which crealou mentions above. PVA--otherwise known as white glue--does not work well AND leaves a yellowish cast. Very surprising, since this was recommended by an instructor in a workshop I took a few years ago.

I like that GAC because it seems to be water proof too, I can use it on hats without fear of them turning into a slimy, sticky mess in the rain (as has happened with starch and pva glue)

Teri--did not know GAC was waterproof! Another good reason to use it as a stiffener.

Maybe I should do some proper tests with it but my hat stood up to some fairly heavy rain... It's acrylic based so I expect it will behave like acrylic paint and won't dissolve again easily
