'Sashiko' meaning 'little stabs' is the Japanese version of running stitch. Historically used to give spiritual protection, there are many traditional patterns, each with their own symbolism.
I love the clean, ordered effect.

Here is our first sample of Kantha stitching we did in class with running stitch. I have some examples of Indian saris on my blog that have many patterns using running stitch. Judith - do you have any good resources on Sashiko? I have to do a study of that for my homework. I'm sure I can just google it but if you know of a good site that would make it easier.

I'm confused. Isn't it straight stitch when used like this? That's nice, Ruth.

It is done with a running stitch so even the ones that look like columns of straight stitches were stitched across the block with a running stitch. You start at the left do a running stitch, then turn back when you get to the right and do a running stitch in the other direction working up from the bottom (or down from the top). You just vary where you place the stitches to get them to stack up in columns. That's why it takes so long because it is pretty exacting where you start and stop each stitch.

I think I understand I can see how using running stitch on yours works, Ruth, I can't always tell on PinTangle where the stitch is that they're showing

That's because her samples always seem to have tons of different stitches on them. Makes it a bit confusing.
