Hello everyone. Thanks for all your kind comments.. The bleach Flax is the only kind I have seen I will have to search and see if I can buy both kinds.. I searched "Every Vendor" athe MFF and No one was selling "Finn Wool" I was disappointed so now I need to search for Finn Wool too. Anyone know a supplier of Finn Wool? Judy, I believe Paradise Fibers sells Finn. I bought some for a class with Fiona Duthie from there.

I got Finn at WOW and it felts really well. I sold my spinning wheel I like my drop spindle better. I never want enough of any wool to make a sweater I just want a small amount to put on my felt. I also like how portable a spindle is. I recently started spinning rollags and they are great< so easy and fun. What part id giving you trouble?

I would like to be able to blend wools. The blending boards seem to produce rolags ... are they only for spinning or can you open them out as batts for felting ? I can see that hand carding is tedious but perhaps someone can give an idea of how long it would take to blend a total of 100 grams / 4 oz of wool, for instance. I thought I ought to try the hand carders before considering the cost of a blending board. I can't see myself buying a drum carder, unless I found a secondhand one, but could it be the only real answer ? I had an idea about buying one as a group, but "first catch your group" ... Any advice gratefully received !

Hello Sonia. I reckon you can unfold them and use them as little batts but I think they are mostly used for spinning. I just used a hand carder for the first time at the MFF (which belong to the teacher) and I found them difficult to work with. The carding board was much nicer but not as nice as my drum carder....I am sure others can give you advice on buying a used drum carder.. Ann I am very serious about selling my Majacraft Rose... I am tired of trying to learn how to spin.. The above are made from a blending board.mostly used for spinning. I think they would make a very thin batt. But very pretty..

I tried hand carding and a hackle and was frustrated with both. There is nothing like a drum carder. I bought my first one used. It's worth looking into. Checkout eBay or Craigs list.

Thank you for your advice ! I will have the opportunity in Sept to go to a wool fair with demos etc, so it will be my first chance to try any equipment. I am sorry to hear about the difficulties of spinning, but at least I needn't be tempted in that direction ! It is the same as people trying to tempt me into buying whole fleeces ... I have already got too much to learn & experiment with, whatever the savings would be !!

From the blending boards I've seen they are just huge boards with the carding cloth on them, you then have to roll the rolags. I use my large hand carders in a similar way for blending small amount, because like others, I have trouble with them the 'proper' way. My little carders are good for blending little bits of fibre, but you just can't beat a drum carder. I'm still annoyed with myself that I didn't get one years ago. Not that I could afford it, but still It really is versatile too, you can make stripey batts (maybe 'batts' isn't really the right word, because if you use commercial wool tops, it's like short, wide roving, not as aligned as tops, but certainly not a batt) or really well blended ones, smooth, or really texturey.

the drum carder is the most versatile. you can use it as a blending board ( they do not blend by the way) if you have a blending board and want a batt you can staple a piece of heavy plastic to one of the dowels so it is easy to unroll them. Hand card work well but they take practice. Judy, you should give a drop spindle a try with someone who is patient and will show you how using park and draft to learn. It is quite relaxing once you get it.
