Hi, I'm Anne, a.k.a. Penguin, and I've been felting on and off for almost a year now - and am delighted to have found this forum! Wow - what a resource! I've so been able to answer every question I had about felting, since I joined a week or so ago ... although I'm sure to have more soon! Sorry not to have introduced myself sooner - I'm usually on an iPad mini and it's a pain to type on that so I waited until I was in front of my PC for a change. I started my felting 'journey' with nuno felting and have played with 'normal' wet felting, simple felting with a resist and pre-felts a bit. I'm currently experimenting with tencel and ramie and prefelt. I've been sewing and playing with textiles since forever but felting has opened up a 'world of endless wonder'! Thanks to all who contribute to this forum - so much useful and interesting stuff!

Welcome Anne! This is a great place to ask questions, share your work and be exposed to new and fun ideas! We love pictures, too! I look forward to see what you've been working on. I started with nuno and progressed to painting with wool and making sculptures. There is still so much to learn and do!

Hello Anne and welcome to the forum. It's great that you're experimenting - please share your experiences with us (I must try ramie - it was mentioned in the forum's blog recently and it looks lovely).

Thank you all for the kind welcomes! I've finally had time to take the hint about photographs! There's one here of the only 'full size' thing I've ever finished in nuno felting, the Cobweb Jacket - although the photograph is actually not of the fully finished jacket, which also has a big beaded button and some beading on the sleeves. I've also just taken some snaps on my iPad of the most recent small samples I've been playing with. The pencil roll (unfinished like most of my stuff!) is wool, scrim and green/blue silk hankies in the main body of it and then an attempt at 'flowers' with some hankies I dyed recently - also shown in a photo of their own. The surface design with gel is using gel medium and paper or foil to get a design on the scrim, and then nunofelting the scrim with merino. Thanks to Ruth Lane's article on the Felting and Felting and Fibre Studio site! There's two separate 'pictures' there -ammonites and a bee and flower - but I haven't cut them up yet!! This is a great technique that I want to experiment with more. The two sketchbook samples are probably self-explanatory - although you might have to turn your head sideways and squint to read them! With the ramie and tencel one, I think I'd try just putting the ramie/tencel 'net' underneath and prefelt on top, rather than sandwiching the prefelt, as it will look nicer without the net over the top. Not yet sure how stable that would be though! I will try to photograph a couple of completed scarves soon, rather than just samples. Just need to find a spare few minutes!

That's a very elegant jacket - have you had an occasion on which to wear it yet?
Your samples are great (I really like the silk hankie flowers and the ammonites, bee and flower) and I look forward to seeing your scarves.
I hope you keep all your samples because it's surprising how many times they can simply inspire a new piece of work or they can be cut up and recycled into a new piece.

The jacket is beautiful! Such a big project! The others are nice as well. You've been busy. I agree with Lyn, always keep your samples. You never know when you might need them for information or a new use. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Lyn and Marilyn,
The jacket is my size (unfortunately!) but i really made it to exhibit in a competition/exhibition at the end of last year more than to wear. 'Silvery Threads' - by Costume and Textile Association in Norwich. Didn't win anything but it did get into the juried exhibition so, as it was the first felted thing I'd ever completed, I was pretty chuffed with that. I haven't had a chance to wear it yet, but next year is our 10th wedding anniversary so perhaps we'll go somewhere fancy and I'll get a chance!
(I may never make another jacket - if I'd realized the work involved before I started ... it would have been a scarf!)
I'm trying to be disciplined with my samples and put them in a sketchbook (or two) and keep everything organised and tidy. Sadly my husband would say organised and tidy shouldn't ever be used when referring to me ... and he's right! The two red samples at the bottom of the photos are for a particular project I'm working on at the moment and I am being good and putting them all in the sketchbook so far along with any ideas to try later ... but for things not relating to that project ... not quite so good!

Anne, your husband sounds like mine. As much as I try to stay organized, well... I am good about fiber samples since I want to remember where I bought it or what I did to get those colors in case I need more. I can't imagine tackling such a big project as a first project. I still haven't made anything that big or complicated. Maybe someday...

Well if you don't know what you're getting into, it's much easier to tackle a big project. (Not so easy to finish it, mind you ... it was mostly fun, but by the time I reached the second sleeve I was about ready to throw the whole lot in the bin!) Good to know I'm not alone in being just a little on the messy side though.

Anne - love seeing your work. Glad you enjoyed the paper lamination technique. You did a great job. I too think making a jacket for your first project was a huge accomplishment. You have a reason to be proud of it.
