Aren't they gorgeous! Enjoy your new fibers and show us what you'll do with them.

Nice package Elizabeth! My Wollknoll order arrived this morning so no prizes for guessing that I've been making samples this afternoon. The cap merino is incredibly soft and almost felts itself, though I was surprised at the incredibly short fibres. The fibre needs to be laid in a completely different manner. I'm still very pleased with it though and the silk pongee is gorgeous - should have ordered more!! Going to test the karakul tomorrow.

Judith, I am planning to order cap merino too. I know it has very short staple, so how do you think you need to lay it? I'd be interested to hear what you think of karakul. I once made slippers with this wool and found out that it does not shrink easily and doesn't give a sturdy felt. Otherwise it is OK.

Cape Merino? How is this different from regular merino? What is the micron count?

I'll post a photo of it tomorrow, too dark now.
It's more like the short ends from carding and too short to pull off wisps. Needs to be laid as a batt and gives a very flat finish. I tried a small nuno sample with the kap and some silk pongee 5 and the silk has all but disappeared, though it's still wet and may show up more when dry. I hope it's going to be OK as I have a lot!!!

Elizabeth - if you look on New England Felting Supply under short fiber merino, it will be similar. It comes in batts, is expensive and felts like a dream. It is wonderful for beads, cords etc because it felts so easily and gives a really smooth finish.

Kap merino fibre:- As you can see the staple is very short indeed and looks rather like noil. It felts in no time at all. kap merino by koffipot, on Flickr Felt and nuno felt samples kap merino and silk pongee 5mm. kap merino by koffipot, on Flickr

Have you used the Kap before? It looks even a shorter staple than the short fiber merino.

I haven't used it before and it's certainly a different experience, but having made a few small samples I think it's going to suit my purpose. It felts and nuno felts very easily and quickly.

Very nice samples, Judith…really like the silky look of the white on white Kap and silk. Adding to my list!

Yes, it looks shorter than the batt fibers we get here. Nice samples Judith.

I have ordered once from them. For the UK, you have to add 3.50 euros to each kilo price, to cover the postage, if you are buying the full 5 kilos. 10 kilos is just 22 euros postage, so it would be good to share ! It is still cheaper than any equivalent supplier in £££. I had a look at the weekend & realised there are a few things (silk ?) which seemed dearer, so watch out ! I found their customer service very good & they sent me a free sample of a blend I wanted to buy a lot of, so I could be sure of the colour before I bought. I got some Artic Fox .. I think it refers to the colour ! The blended batts I got are gorgeous (merino 27 mic). I tried quite a few things & all the quality is very good. It is a pity they dont give more info on each product, such as staple length etc. They will answer emails in English, so I suggest you compile a list of questions ! Finally, the order took a while to come, perhaps two weeks or more, but the sample and the email replies were quick.

Sorry, as a newbie I have only just found all the other pages in this thread ! Would those of you who ordered stuff keep letting us know what they find good ? I have never heard of Kap merino but cant wait to order it now, so need more suggestions to help fill the box ! What is karakul good for ?

They give a 14 day cooling off period, so I suppose you can't expect them to deal with it immediately. Having said that, mine arrived in 10 days.
