So as we're heading off down this tangent, the silk screws for bones reminded me of a Ted Talk I watched last year - about scientific developments using silk. I don't profess to understand it all, but it's quite amazing. Here if anyone's interested: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqqWw3xkMzA

Frances I made the comment because the site went on about not killing the worm and then in the dying part say they use cochineal for dying. I wondered why one bug was ok to kill and not the other.
Red velvet cake anyone?

Ann - I understand now - I thought maybe the dye was toxic or something - and so it is all about insects and whether or not to kill/eat them :-) I will pass even if they are Chcolate Covered or deep fried in Tempura Batter.

You have probably eaten them many times. They are crushed up and use to make food colouring as well as for dyeing. It is best not to think about some things to much.

I must say, I just love how these threads spinn off into discussions about all sorts of different topics. From silk fibers to eating insects. ;-) You find a post you have missed, start reading it, and never know where it will end up. If we met in real life, we could probably sitt around a table, obviously felting, but also talking for days! :-)

... And, yes, I have eaten larvae ("Mopane Worms" as they are called, when I worked in Africa). They didn't taste much, but I can't say I liked it. Some claim insects will be a future major source of protein for us humans. Sounds quite gloomy to me.

They have been talking about that for decades Zara, but I've yet to see any in mass production, thankfully!

I always think how great it is that we could visit a bunch of different countries and find "our clan" and it would be like a family reunion
