Hello Mary,
My DH and I are heading south the middle of February and on our home we plan to visit Henersonville and Ashville NC. Is there any special area you would suggest visiting for someone interested in felting and embroidery. Thanks for the advice.. Much appreciated..

Mary - I find that putting pieces on canvas make people think it is more like "art". I almost always do my pieces that way now. Lovely feather piece and story.

Like Ruth, I also wrap my felted landscapes/abstract art around canvas or wooden stretchers, depending on the individual piece. For most exhibits, I’ve discovered that’s a must do!

Mary you should copy write that piece - I can see someone making prints and selling them. Or you should have prints and/or cards made of it to sell. Did you felt the feather in or just recreate a feather with beads.
I live in North Georgia (Cumming) about 190 miles or 3 hours(for Zed)away from Ashville and it is one of my favorite places to visit. I have a friend going though chemotherapy and she is being treated to a weekend at the Spa at the Grove Park Inn at the end of the month.
Please let me know if there are shops that carry a good selection of roving - if so it might be worth a trip to meet you and do some shopping. I have a friend from Florida who knits and visits once a year to shop.

A lovely piece Mary. The beaded feather is great. If you click on the picture it will make it bigger.

Marilyn.....I live about half way between Franklin and Asheville.....almost an hour from my house to either location. Sooooo.....off subject....but have you ever eaten at Cafe REL in Franklin? THE BEST gas station restaurant ever.....don't know why this chef opened his French Bistro type cafe there, but it's ALWAYS crowded and always great. The chef/owner had been the chef at the famous Greenbrier, got tired of the hassle and moved to Franklin ages ago. We are new to this area.....transplants from Wisconsin....seeking milder winters. Holler if you - or any of you folks get this way.....it'd be great to meet up.

They just moved to Florida two years ago. We were there for our step grandsons graduation from Western Carolina. He and his wife are moving to Raleigh next month, but her parents are still there. All the times we've been to visit we never visited the Biltmore so that's still on our bucket list. Also, I hope to take some classes in Asheville at some point. I'd love to meet you. I'm sure we'll be back. We just came back from Hawaii and I was privileged to meet Cherry one of our new members while I was there. One of the great perks of being a forum member is that you have felting friends is just about every port!

Hi Marilyn, I wrote a more detailed reply to your note.....but I don't see it here......it's off in cyberspace somewhere. But I wanted to say....I live between Franklin and Asheville....about an hour from each. Do let me know if you come into town and have time to visit. That goes for anyone else on the list!!! AND...when in Franklin.....I hope you've tried the fabulous food at Cafe REL. An amazing French Bistro located in of all places a gas station. The chef once ran the kitchen at the Greenbrier....and left looking for the peace and beauty of the mountains.

Hello all.....I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply.....I was gone all day yesterday to one of the small fiber groups I belong to......and today I did my last lecture/workshop....(despite officially retiring at the end of Dec. - the speaker a local guild had hired bailed on them so they asked me to step in). The suitcases are finally zipped for good and the lap top, digital projector and camera for the live feed workshops I present have been put in moth balls. So...back to the conversation... Judy asked about places to visit in the area......Yes, the Folk Art Center on the Parkway is a great option. Grovewood Gallery located on the grounds of the Grovepark Inn is another inspiring place. There's a new shop that I have yet to visit but it's getting good reviews.... Fiber & Friends in Chandler, NC friendsandfiberworks.com/ Downtown Asheville is full of galleries and shop that guarantee inspiration as are many of the shops in downtown Hendersonville. BUT if you want to shop fiber.....a must is the Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair - held every fall on the fairgrounds - across from the Asheville airport. The dates next year are Oct. 30, 31 & Nov. 1. Learn more here: saffsite.org/And finally....Frances asked whether the white feather was felted or recreated using beads. It's 100% beaded using a variety of colors of white/off-white, clear, sliver seed beads.

Hello Mary,
Enjoy your retirement... You are living in a most beautiful state with so much artistic inspiration.. I am very envious.. Smile..
Thanks for all the information you have provided. I am so looking forward to visiting North Carolina again...
A Wee Story:. Many years ago (approximately year 2000) my Dear friend from Australia came for a visit and we spend some time driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway from Virginia down to NC... We were heading south out of Asheville on this most wonderful Parkway road and truly enjoying all the Mountain Scenery and then it dawn on us suddenly that the area was most remote with NO towns anywhere and we really did not know where we were.. LOL Then I notice the gas tank was just about "Empty".... (No GPS) so we got out the old fashion map and by the time we found a way off the parkway and to a wee town we were on empty... I had never seen so many curvy and steep Mountains roads to drive on.. We still Laugh about this fun time we had in NC..
I hope you all did mine my wee story. Back then We were only into quilting so did not stop to see other stuff.. Smile

Hi Judy......I had a laugh out loud moment reading your NC tale.....it's sooooo true. I've often said we move 15 mins. off the interstate but 100 back in time! I'm in the mountains about 50 mins. West of Asheville....but even Asheville, which has BIG reputation, is really quite a puny town. Restaurants - yes Galleries - yes..... if you want to purchase a pair of jeans......there's Walmart. We do almost all our shopping online.....it's an adjustment living here but we do enjoy the beauty, milder climate (than our home state of Wisconsin, and yes......the creative energy here is amazing.
Worth the visit and everyone......do let me know if you are headed this way......it's always such fun meeting up with online friends in person.
